Hello everyone,
I have had an IKEA Hemnes bed for some time now, which unfortunately has started to produce increasingly annoying squeaking noises. The bed is neither particularly old nor heavily used. My question is: Is there a simple, practical solution to permanently stop the squeaking of IKEA Hemnes beds? I have already tried several things, such as tightening the screws and treating the wooden parts with wax, but the results were only temporary. I would really appreciate tips that not only provide a short-term fix but address the problem sustainably. I am especially interested in methods that can be carried out without expensive specialized products and without completely disassembling the bed. Has anyone had experience or tricks on how to effectively reduce the typical movement and material noises of this model?

Hello RON64,
I can completely understand how annoying a constantly squeaking bed can be—especially when all you want is a good night's sleep. With my Hemnes bed, I found that the noises often come from stressed spots at the joints, which can change slightly due to humidity and temperature fluctuations. What helped me was patiently checking and tightening all the screws, even those that aren’t immediately visible.
I know that all too well. That’s why I also attached small felt pads at the contact points between wood and metal—it greatly reduced direct friction. Patience is important for me as well: sometimes it’s a combination of several minor causes that need to be addressed step by step. Have you checked whether any individual slatted bed bases are sagging or wobbling?
Keep at it, I’m sure there are still some helpful tips here for you!

Hello RON64,
to assist you more effectively, it would be helpful to know a bit more about your setup. For example:
- Are you using the slatted bed base supplied by IKEA, or do you have your own?
- Did you assemble the bed by yourself or with help, and has the assembly ever been checked to ensure everything is level and firmly secured?
- Do the squeaking noises mainly occur when moving the bed in a rolling direction, or generally when tilting the bed frame?
The cause of squeaking in wooden beds is usually friction between materials – wood on wood, wood on metal, or metal on metal. This friction creates vibrations, which we perceive as squeaking. The Hemnes series, among other things, uses dowels, wood joints, and metal fittings. It is common for certain edges to swell slightly due to moisture or become roughened by dust particles.
My suggestion for a sustainable solution involves a multi-step approach:
- Thoroughly check and tighten all screws, bolts, and wood connectors, making sure the wooden dowels are properly seated.
- Gently roughen the wooden support surfaces, such as those between the slatted base and frame, with very fine sandpaper to slightly reduce tension.
- Apply fine sanding dust or talcum powder to wood joints – these work as lubricants.
- Placing thin felt strips or self-adhesive foam rubber on contact areas of the frame can help reduce friction noise.
Therefore, I advise against using candle wax solutions, as they can become sticky over time and attract dirt. A few more questions: How old is the bed exactly? Has the problem developed suddenly or gradually worsened? This might indicate whether a component is damaged or has loosened.
I look forward to your reply!

Hello RON64,
to easily fix squeaky IKEA Hemnes beds, I recommend:
- Completely loosen the screws and secure them again with a small drop of wood glue.
- Then tighten the screws firmly.
- Spray the contact points with Teflon spray or silicone spray.
This usually eliminates the squeaking quite effectively and lasts longer.
