Hello everyone,

I am considering purchasing some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, mainly because of the design and wood appearance. Since I live in a shared flat and the furniture will likely be subjected to heavy use, I am particularly interested in the question: How long does IKEA Hemnes actually last under intensive use?

By intensive use, I mean furniture that is loaded several times a day, such as dressers, beds, or cabinets that are frequently used, sometimes by multiple people at once.

Do any of you have experience or insights on how durable this furniture is and how long it holds up in such conditions?

I would appreciate your assessments and opinions very much.

My Hemnes dresser has been withstanding daily opening and closing for over 4 years without any issues. Just be careful not to put anything too heavy on top.

Durability really depends on the construction. Hemnes is solid for the price, but with heavy use, screws and hinges may wear out faster.

That’s a good point, thanks! Do you have any tips on how to improve robustness during construction or how to maintain stronger components for as long as possible? I’m interested in maximizing the lifespan, not just the product itself.

Hello Bauteo,

IKEA Hemnes is generally considered to be sturdy since it is made of solid wood. For heavy use, I recommend the following:

- Always tighten screws securely, but avoid over-tightening
- Occasionally check and retighten if anything becomes loose
- Avoid overloading the furniture, especially the shelves
- For beds, pay attention to the slatted frame connection

It is completely normal for screws to loosen over the years. Hemnes is easy to repair if replacement parts are obtained.

These tips will help you maximize the product’s lifespan.

I understand your concerns, especially when the furniture is used daily. In my household, the Hemnes wardrobe series has lasted for almost 6 years, even though three children and two adults use it every day.

Of course, there were occasional minor hinge issues, but nothing that couldn’t be quickly fixed with a simple replacement. It's reassuring to know that if something does break, it’s not necessarily a complete loss.
