MO-BARHello everyone,
I am currently looking into how to securely and stably attach an Ikea Besta shelving unit to the wall. It is especially important for me to learn about possible instructions or recommended practices that ensure the safety of the entire piece of furniture—particularly when it will later hold a television or heavier decorations.
Is there an official or commonly recommended guideline for the Besta system on how to best and permanently secure it to different wall types (e.g., drywall, concrete, brick)?
I would appreciate any tips, advice on reliable methods, or practical experiences on the best way to install the shelving unit to prevent it from tipping or hanging too loosely.

Hello,
for mounting Ikea Besta units on the wall, you should definitely use the supplied brackets. These usually come with anchors for concrete or brick walls. For drywall (plasterboard) walls, it is better to use special cavity anchors. Important: always screw into a wall stud whenever possible.

There is no single official guideline covering all wall types for securely and stably mounting an Ikea Besta shelf unit to the wall. In general, it is recommended to use the wall fasteners supplied by Ikea. These consist of metal brackets mounted with suitable screws and anchors.
Important points:
- The choice of anchors must match the wall type. For concrete and brick walls, standard expansion anchors are commonly used.
- For drywall (plasterboard) walls, specialized hollow wall anchors should be used to better distribute the weight.
- The Besta should always be securely fixed at a minimum of two points to prevent tipping.
- Before installation, the wall should be checked with an appropriate tool to detect any cables or pipes.
In principle, stability also depends on the load: if the shelf is bearing a TV or heavier equipment, additional measures are advisable, such as extra cross braces or deeper anchoring. If possible, the unit can be further secured by fastening it to the floor or adjacent furniture.
Ikea only provides a general assembly guide including attachment instructions; specific recommendations depending on wall types need to be adapted individually and, if necessary, discussed with a professional tradesperson.

Ikea provides basic mounting hardware, but wall conditions vary greatly, making a one-size-fits-all solution difficult.
From my experience, I recommend:
- Use standard anchors suitable for heavy loads on concrete walls.
- For drywall, use metal hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts, as these hold significantly better than simple plastic anchors.
- It’s important to align the brackets precisely and fix them with at least four screws to distribute the load evenly.
- Additionally, if possible, secure the top edge of the Besta unit with a sturdy safety strap or metal braces and extra wall anchors.
Another option is to reinforce the substructure by attaching additional wooden battens or steel profiles to the wall, providing a secure base for mounting Besta. This is especially advisable if you plan to place heavy items on the shelf.
If you are unsure, consulting a professional tradesperson or an experienced DIYer with wall mounting expertise is a good idea. Safety comes first, especially with tall furniture in homes with children or pets.
