Hello everyone, I’m considering whether it’s possible to retrofit the doors of the IKEA Pax wardrobe with a soft-close function. This question isn’t straightforward for me because I already know the hinges are special and the system probably isn’t designed for soft-close by default. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to add a soft-close feature to these doors without completely replacing the hinges or doing major modifications? Specifically, I’m interested in whether retrofit kits are available or if it’s necessary to switch to certain models. Thanks in advance for your insights!

You can only rarely retrofit original soft-close hinges because the Pax hinges are special. My advice: just buy new soft-close hinges and replace the old ones completely.

The main challenge when retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on Pax doors lies primarily in the design of the hinges and the door thickness. Standard Pax hinges are not soft-close models, and IKEA often sells the doors only with these specific hinges included. Retrofitting with universal soft-close dampers on the hinges is difficult because they are generally made for standard furniture and the mounting points on Pax hinges are unique.

What is possible:
- Completely replacing the hinges with soft-close models, which IKEA sells separately.
- Using external soft-close dampers mounted between the door and the cabinet frame; however, sufficient space is required, and they do not always work satisfactorily.

I wonder: How much experience do you have with installation, or are you looking for the least amount of effort? Are you willing to remove and fully replace the hinges, or are you seeking a simple plug-and-play solution?

Good question, thanks! I basically have some DIY skills and no problem with screwdrivers. The external dimensions of the doors, etc., are neither unusual nor tightly fitted. Complete removal and reinstallation of the doors is not a major obstacle for me, provided that the soft-close hinges can be reliably and appropriately purchased. Plug-and-play solutions without hinge replacement would of course be easier if they work well.

Retrofitting soft-close on Pax? I did it by buying the IKEA soft-close hinges that fit Pax. Unhung the doors, replaced the hinges, done. No tinkering needed.

Exactly, IKEA offers these hinges separately. This is the cleanest solution and causes the least problems.
