Hello everyone,
I recently assembled an IKEA Malm chest of drawers with several drawers at home. Unfortunately, some of the drawers are not aligned properly; they stick when opening and closing and don’t close flush. I have already tried adjusting the small screws on the metal runners, but the results have been rather poor.
My specific question is: How can I properly adjust the drawers of the IKEA Malm chest so that they slide smoothly and close evenly? Is there a special trick, or should I just adjust the screws on the sides? Which adjustment screws affect the height, depth, and alignment of the drawers?
I would appreciate detailed tips, as I want to avoid having to remove or completely reassemble the drawers. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know if the drawer fronts on Malm are easy to remove?Yes, they are removable. There are small clips or screws inside the drawers that need to be loosened. It’s best to be careful to avoid damaging the front.
Briefly about adjustment:
- Slightly lift the drawers at the front
- Turn the adjustment screws on the metal slides at the back
- Side screws are usually for tilting or lateral adjustment
If there is only one screw on the side, it usually means you can adjust the height using the rear screw and the tilt using the side position.

I will check the plastic glides Exactly, that often makes the difference! If the glides are worn out or torn, the drawer won’t slide properly anymore. Just order new ones, they cost almost nothing and are quick to replace.
Regarding the front panel: yes, usually the fronts on Malm are attached with small clips, not glued, so they can be removed easily. If the front is warped, that’s uncommon, but you can check it without any problem 🙂
Topic: Aligning
Please also make sure that the drawer slides are perfectly straight on the back side. Sometimes the angle there is slightly off, which causes the drawers to jam.
If possible, you can loosen the drawer slides on the back panel and try realigning them precisely again.

If you want to completely remove the rails: Make sure to remember the exact order of the parts beforehand. In some IKEA models, the plastic gliders are mounted in the track and need to be aligned correctly, otherwise the drawer will stick.
After assembly, be sure to tighten all screws evenly.

Hello everyone,
I’m checking in again with an update. Last night, I removed the drawers and checked all the screws on the drawer slides, tightening some of them as needed. The plastic runners on one slide looked a bit worn, so I replaced them. I also adjusted the rear leveling screws to change the height and slightly altered the side screws.
Result: The two bottom drawers now run much more smoothly and no longer stick when opening or closing! I haven’t removed the drawer fronts yet since they still look fine.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, especially the tip about the plastic runners – that was really valuable!
If anyone has further questions, I’m happy to share more tips.
