Hello everyone,

I have been experiencing an issue for some time now where the drawers of my IKEA Malm dresser often stick. By "stick," I mean that they no longer open and close smoothly and easily but tend to catch quickly or become difficult to operate. I am interested in understanding the exact causes. Are there common reasons such as incorrect assembly, material deformation, or possible problems with the drawer slides?

I bought the dresser about 2 years ago, and it is placed on a very level surface. I use the drawers normally, without any excessive load. Still, they are increasingly sticking.

Perhaps someone here has good knowledge about this and can also explain what to pay attention to during assembly or maintenance to prevent the sticking? Thanks in advance for your detailed advice!

Hello,

most of the time, the issue is caused by drawers that are too tight or incorrectly installed. The floor should also be completely level, otherwise the chest of drawers can easily become distorted. Simply loosen the drawers and adjust them properly; this often helps.

Hi fumau,

Your issue is very common with Malm dressers, as the drawer slides use a relatively simple metal glide rail that can become stiff with even slight misalignment. Possible causes include:

1. Assembly: If the screws are overtightened, the thin metal can bend slightly, which affects smooth operation.

2. Material warping: Wood or particleboard can warp slightly depending on humidity levels. This is especially true for lower-quality board materials.

3. Drawer jams: Dust, small plywood pieces, or screw heads can quickly block the mechanism.

4. Load: Excessive weight in the drawer can cause the slides, especially the cheaper ones, to stick.

Could you check if the dresser’s side panels are perfectly vertical? Also, take a look at the drawer slides—are they completely free of dirt, and are the screws tight or loose? A small adjustment of the screws on the slides, sometimes just a few millimeters (inches) forward or backward, can often help.

It would also be helpful to know if you positioned the slides precisely during assembly; correct screw tightening is crucial here.

I would like to add that Malm dressers often experience what is called the "twisting" of the drawer within the frame, especially if the dresser is not perfectly level or has been moved. Even slight deformations over the years can cause the drawer to get stuck. A simple method is to remove the drawers, clean the runners of both the dresser and the drawer, and then align them precisely.
Additionally, applying a small amount of silicone spray to the sliding rails can significantly improve the drawer’s glide.

Thank you for the responses so far.

@Palenar: The dresser is definitely level; I checked it precisely with a spirit level. I also rechecked all the screws, and they are tight. The drawer slides look reasonably clean, but I will clean them thoroughly once more.

I haven’t overloaded the drawers; they are filled normally, without excessive weight.

@blapau: Silicone spray sounds interesting—won’t it damage the surface? I was more concerned about using any products that might harm the wood or change its appearance.

If you have any tips on how exactly to clean the drawer slides and what to use, I would appreciate it.

Hello fumau,

I would like to add that besides mechanical factors, environmental conditions also play a significant role. Most Malm dressers are made of particleboard, which reacts to moisture. Especially in summer, with fluctuating humidity levels, the side panels can swell, causing the drawers to stick.

1. Monitor the indoor humidity: If you experience strong fluctuations, for example, no air conditioning, the boards may expand or change shape.

2. Check the smoothness of the drawer slides: Remove all drawers, clean the slides and the runners inside the dresser with a dry cloth. Then apply a light coating of a dry lubricant. Greasy substances tend to be counterproductive.

3. Check if the drawer itself is warped by placing it on a flat surface.

If you want thorough cleaning, alcohol or specialized plastic cleaners work well, but please avoid water or stronger cleaning agents.

If you like, I can provide a detailed step-by-step guide on how to completely remove, clean, and reinstall the drawer slides.
