Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an IKEA Besta shelving unit and want to make sure I care for the surfaces properly so they stay in good condition and don’t get damaged. Since the surfaces include Lacobel glass and plastic laminate, I am cautious about which cleaning products to use.

My question is: Which care products are suitable specifically for the surfaces of the IKEA Besta system to clean and protect them without causing dullness, clouding, or damage? Are there any cleaning agents that should definitely be avoided, and can you provide specific recommendations for the types of care or cleaning products one should use?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

For glass surfaces like Lacobel, I recommend a clear glass cleaner spray and a microfiber cloth.

For plastic surfaces, a damp cloth with mild dish soap is usually sufficient. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive agents, as they will cause scratches.

I would like to add a more detailed explanation:

The IKEA Besta surfaces often consist of lacquered glass (Lacobel) and melamine resin-coated laminate surfaces. Both materials require different cleaning methods:

- For the Lacobel glass surfaces, a standard alcohol-based glass cleaner is most suitable. It removes grease and dust without leaving residues or streaks.
- For the laminate surfaces, only a mild cleaning agent should be used. The best options are specialized furniture cleaners or simply water with a small amount of neutral dish soap.
- Alcohol- or solvent-based cleaners should be avoided on laminate, as they can damage the protective coating.
- Abrasive cleaners and rough sponges are not recommended, as they can scratch the surface.

For maintenance, I do not recommend using waxes or oils, as these can discolor or weaken the surface. Generally, cleaning with a damp cloth followed by drying with a dry cloth is optimal.

As an additional tip: for tougher stains, you might consider using diluted vinegar water, but always test it first on an inconspicuous area to ensure the surface remains undamaged.

Hello Kofuta,

to answer your question more thoroughly, I would like to also focus on the proper handling, as cleaning furniture surfaces requires the right technique:

This advice is very important. Glass surfaces should always be cleaned with a lint-free microfiber cloth, as regular cloths can leave fibers behind or cause scratches.

This hits the nail on the head. It is also important to wipe the damp surface with a dry cloth after cleaning to prevent water spots or streaks.

Additionally, I would recommend avoiding chemical cleaners based on formic acid or chlorine, as these can damage laminate.

If you want, I can send you a brief summary of the most important dos and don’ts for surface care.
