ᐅ IKEA BESTA – How Can I Prevent Dust Buildup Inside?

Hello everyone,

I have several IKEA Besta cabinets at home that I use for media devices and books. What bothers me in everyday use is the quite significant dust buildup inside the cabinets—especially under the shelves and in hard-to-reach areas.

Since the Besta units usually have doors but are not completely airtight, I’m wondering: What effective methods are there to prevent dust accumulation inside IKEA Besta furniture? Are there any special tricks, materials, or approaches that can reduce the problem without having to constantly empty everything and clean manually?

I’m looking forward to your experience or technical tips on how to manage this issue long-term.

Based on the description, I would recommend the following additional measures:

- Since the back panels are only slotted in place, dust gaps can form there. One solution is to seal the joints with thin foam or silicone sealing tape. This noticeably reduces dust infiltration.

- Treat the interior surfaces with an anti-static spray film. These products create a slight charge on the surface that repels dust. This is especially effective under the shelves and along the sidewalls.

- The wooden doors could also be fitted with sealing strips (similar to window seals). This improves the airtightness and helps minimize air exchange.

- Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment for occasional cleaning of the gaps inside, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

- Ultimately, airtight storage boxes are the best option for sensitive items that are not kept outside continuously.

Are you noticing dust primarily coming in from below, through the cabinet floor, or more from the sides and back panels?

From my own observations, the dust comes both from underneath (especially with laminate floors in the apartment) and from the back panels. The back panels have a small gap to the wall, which I consider an additional cavity where dust likely enters. The shelves themselves show little difference in dust levels, which suggests that not only “falling dust” from above is responsible.

Your tips about sealing tape and antistatic spray film sound very practical. Do you have any specific product recommendations or advice on durability? Should I expect any odors or glue residues?

General:

- Silicone-based sealing tapes have low odor and are long-lasting. They can be removed without residue if needed.
- Water-based antistatic sprays usually have low odor but should always be used in well-ventilated areas.
- Alternative for the interior side: use electrostatic microfiber cloths regularly.
- This can effectively reduce the frequency of cleaning.

Important: Surfaces should be dust-free and dry before applying the film or sprays; otherwise, adhesion will be poor.

The frequency of cleaning can be significantly reduced this way.

How often do you really feel like dusting? 😂 Jokes aside, it’s like with plants – a little care now and then keeps the whole unit safe from dust monsters.

And regarding the gaps: some weatherstripping in the right places acts like a protective coat for your BESTAs. A bit of anti-static spray and you’re practically a dust whisperer at home.

Also, consider whether you can lightly seal the back walls with clear varnish – this significantly reduces dust accumulation.

Interesting suggestion. So the surface stays smoother, which especially on the particleboard surfaces prevents dust particles from sticking as much? How often would it need to be reapplied, and can I use regular clear varnish from a hardware store? I was thinking of a furniture-grade finish.
