Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my new kitchen with Ikea Metod and considering adding a kitchen island for extra storage and more workspace. However, I am unsure how to properly design and build a Metod kitchen island to ensure it is stable while making the best possible use of the storage space.
I am especially interested in:
- Which cabinet combinations work best for islands?
- What should be considered regarding anchoring and assembly to make sure the island is stable?
- Are there any tips for designing the workspace as efficiently as possible, maybe including pull-out elements?
I look forward to your experiences and advice, especially regarding the challenges with Ikea Metod, which can sometimes be tricky.
Thanks in advance!

- Use at least one central panel inside the cabinets to increase rigidity.
- Connect all modules with brackets and screw them together carefully.
- Align the height properly and check the leveling feet.
- Secure the countertop with strong screws.
Thatâs basically all you need if you work carefully.

Iâm also wondering how realistic it is to integrate appliances or a sink alongside the countertop.Good point! When including appliances or a sink in the island, you need to consider not only the structural load but also the water and electrical connections. Especially the Metod base cabinets are not all waterproof, so proper sealing and waterproofing are essential to avoid problems after a few years.
For me, a combination of storage space, work surface, and appliances is ideal, but it always requires professional planningâotherwise, unexpected issues can end up costing more than anticipated.

Are there any tips for designing the work surface as efficiently as possible, maybe with extendable elements?I recommend using pull-out cutting boards and scrap drawers beneath the countertop. These can usually be easily integrated into Ikea Metod units and provide additional workspace without taking up extra room.
Also, consider the countertop thickness: at 38 mm (1.5 inches), more overhangs and inserts are possible.
Table extensions that can be folded out as needed to create temporary extra workspace are also practical.
Ikeaâs planning tool or your own sketches can help you visualize these solutions in advance and avoid mistakes.
