Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my new kitchen with Ikea Metod and considering adding a kitchen island for extra storage and more workspace. However, I am unsure how to properly design and build a Metod kitchen island to ensure it is stable while making the best possible use of the storage space.

I am especially interested in:
- Which cabinet combinations work best for islands?
- What should be considered regarding anchoring and assembly to make sure the island is stable?
- Are there any tips for designing the workspace as efficiently as possible, maybe including pull-out elements?

I look forward to your experiences and advice, especially regarding the challenges with Ikea Metod, which can sometimes be tricky.

Thanks in advance!

Good question! In my opinion, Metod base cabinets with drawers are an excellent foundation for kitchen islands. They provide plenty of storage space and make it easier to access cutlery, pots, or other kitchen utensils.

For stability, using a continuous countertop is helpful – it ensures enough support and looks neat.

And if you like pull-out elements, try carousel drawers or pull-outs – they make the entire workspace even more flexible. Have fun building!

The stability of a Metod kitchen island mainly depends on the proper substructure. It is important to securely screw the base cabinets together and properly connect them with the countertop.

Depending on the type of floor, adjustable feet should be precisely calibrated to prevent wobbling.

Additional anchoring to the floor is rarely necessary but significantly increases stability for large islands.

For the countertop, I recommend a thickness of at least 28 mm (1.1 inches), preferably made of HPL or solid wood, to avoid warping.

I would like to add a brief guide on how to properly build an Ikea Metod kitchen island to create more storage and workspace:

- Planning: Choose modules with drawers and pull-outs that can hold frequently used items. Pull-out pantry units or corner carousel units can optimize storage space efficiently.

- Assembly: Securely connect the cabinets using the supplied connectors to create a stable unit.

- Worktop: Position the countertop with enough overhang for usability, but not so much that it becomes unstable. Use adhesive and screws to fix it securely in place.

- Feet and Adjustment: Ikea adjustable legs allow for fine-tuning to compensate for uneven floors.

- Electrical or Sink: If you plan to integrate appliances or a sink into the island, check the necessary connections and ensure structural stability early on.

A quick tip: During the final assembly phase, check the cabinets for level alignment again. This helps avoid later problems with the countertop.

It is very important not just to assemble them loosely but to properly screw them together; otherwise, the island may wobble.

That’s true, but the weight distribution should not be underestimated. Especially for larger islands without wall attachments, using only drawers can lead to stability issues.

Additionally, I wonder how realistic it is to integrate appliances or a sink alongside the countertop. It is essential to verify whether the base cabinets can withstand the weight and long-term exposure to moisture.

In any case, I recommend reinforcing the island with additional structural measures, such as a cross brace under the countertop or built-in metal reinforcements.
