Hello everyone,

I am currently considering buying an Ikea Brimnes drawer set but have some concerns about the durability of the drawers, especially with frequent opening and closing. My main question is: How sturdy are the Ikea Brimnes drawers with regular use?

I am particularly interested in the load capacity of the drawer slides and the drawers themselves – specifically, how well the sliding mechanism holds up after several months or even years of daily use. Are there any issues with warping, sticking drawers, or difficult-to-open slides?

Perhaps some people here have long-term experience with this model or knowledge of the materials and construction used. I simply don’t want drawers that start to stick or feel loose after a short time.

I would appreciate your experiences and assessments. Thanks in advance!

I have been using the Brimnes chest of drawers for about 2 years, opening and closing it daily, especially the larger drawers.

The drawers still slide very well and do not stick. It is important to install the runners correctly and not to overload the drawers with too much weight.

With normal use, I have not noticed any signs of wear so far.

Regarding the durability of the Ikea Brimnes drawers with frequent opening and closing, the following details apply:

Ikea primarily uses coated engineered wood materials (MDF and particle board) combined with metal drawer slides for the Brimnes series. This combination is generally sturdy if the specified load limits are respected.

- The metal slides are usually partial-extension ball-bearing types that allow smooth opening. These ball bearings are of good quality but are not comparable to the more expensive full-extension or soft-close systems found in higher-end furniture.

- Proper installation is crucial, with particular attention to aligning the slides correctly. Misaligned slides can cause premature wear or jamming.

- Engineered wood materials may slightly warp under high humidity, which can lead to minor fit issues over time, making the drawers somewhat harder to open.

My advice: Avoid constantly fully loading the drawers, especially the smaller compartments, as they are not designed to handle continuously heavy loads. This unnecessarily stresses the slides and overall construction.

Can you roughly estimate how often you will open the drawers daily and what kind of loads you plan to store? This information will help provide a more precise assessment.

That sounds good in theory, but I find it problematic considering that Ikea furniture aims to be affordable and often makes compromises in material quality.

One should also critically consider how durable the drawers really are in the long term – especially with frequent use. Warping of engineered wood due to moisture is a common issue, but does this actually affect the Brimnes series significantly?

Additionally, how well do the installed rails withstand overloading? Are there reports of them loosening or becoming worn out over time?

I would suggest using long-term reviews from real daily use to form a reliable assessment, rather than relying solely on theoretical evaluations of materials and components.

A detailed comparison with alternative models would be interesting here to assess the value for money of the Brimnes drawers.
