Hello everyone, I’m planning to buy a Pax wardrobe from Ikea soon, but I’m a bit unsure about the time required for assembly. So my question is: How long does it typically take to assemble an Ikea Pax wardrobe, including putting together the individual components and installing either sliding doors or regular doors, while working carefully? I’m looking for a realistic estimate that can serve as a guideline for both beginners and somewhat experienced DIYers. Thanks in advance for your opinions and practical experience!

Hey Franco4! Great question! 🙂 I recently assembled my PAX, and I would say the whole process took about 4-5 hours with two people. You need to keep in mind that it really depends on the size of the wardrobe and also how many doors or drawers you install! But don’t worry – if you approach it systematically, it’s actually fun. Definitely take your time and don’t rush. Good luck with the assembly!

Hello Franco4, your question is really valid, as the effort required for IKEA furniture is often underestimated. From my experience, assembling a simple PAX wardrobe about 2 meters (6.5 feet) high and 1.5 meters (5 feet) wide usually takes between 3 and 6 hours. It makes a difference whether you work alone or with two people, because screws and large parts can be a bit more difficult to handle solo. It is important to approach the assembly step by step, follow the instructions carefully, and especially sort all the parts before starting. If you have no prior experience with furniture assembly, it can certainly take longer. If sliding doors are desired, you should allow an additional 30 minutes or so, as they do require some patience. I hope this helps!

In my experience: about 4 hours with one other person. Installing doors takes an additional approximately 30 minutes. Much faster when working together.

I always find it funny how many people are put off by assembling the PAX system. Of course, Ikea itself says that you should set aside plenty of time for such a large system. But honestly: if it really takes more than 6 hours, you either have two left hands or you don’t feel like reading the instructions.

Absolutely right, but some turn assembly into a huge project and then endlessly debate every single screw in forums. Just grab your tools, work step by step, and that’s it. If the wardrobe is ready after a day’s work, that’s perfectly fine.

Maybe the real discussion should be whether the design of PAX really needs to be that time-consuming, or if Ikea is simply asking too much with systems that are too complex?

For a more accurate estimate: A typical PAX wardrobe of average size (approximately 200 cm height, 150 cm width) usually takes between 3.5 to 5 hours to assemble with two people. Installing sliding doors can add an extra 30 to 45 minutes, as precise alignment and fine adjustments are necessary. The assembly time varies depending on experience, tools, and preparation. The time required increases proportionally with the number of shelves, drawers, and customizations.

If there is any uncertainty, it is advisable to carefully review the included instructions beforehand to better understand the process. It is also recommended to sort all components before starting to avoid time spent searching.

Professional assembly by IKEA or third parties typically takes less than 3 hours but involves additional costs.
