Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am now wondering how long such a shelf typically lasts with normal use – that is, for storing books in a home, neither heavily loaded nor mistreated. I am especially interested in its everyday lifespan, considering factors like material fatigue, structural stability, and frequency of use. Are there any experiences or even measurements available? How long can one realistically expect a Billy bookshelf to last before it weakens or shows signs of damage? I am also curious whether regular maintenance or certain placement locations can affect its durability.
Thanks in advance for your insights and experiences!

I have had a BILLY bookshelf in my living room for about 7 years now, and it still feels very sturdy. Of course, you can see some minor scratches and slight discoloration from sunlight, but in terms of stability, I haven’t had any issues. The shelves easily hold books, which aren’t particularly heavy.
I would say that with normal use, a BILLY bookshelf can easily last 10 to 15 years or more—provided you don’t constantly empty it out or use it as a climbing frame 😉 A bit of care and not overloading it with too much weight will ensure you get a long service life. 🙂

I would like to add a technical perspective to clarify the question: How long does a BILLY shelf typically last under normal everyday use in an average household?
The BILLY shelf is mainly made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating. The main wear occurs due to mechanical stress and moisture. The common weak points are:
1. Shelf load: With loads up to 30 kg per shelf, the sagging is minimal and wear is low. Higher loads increase the likelihood of permanent deformation.
2. Assembly and fastening: The shelves are connected with dowels and screws; frequent disassembly and reassembly can reduce stability.
3. Moisture: Direct exposure to moisture causes the particleboard to swell, which damages the shelf.
With normal use (books, no moisture, no extreme loads), I consider a lifespan of at least 10 years realistic. Additionally, the surroundings should be taken into account – direct sunlight can fade the surfaces and slightly weaken the joints.
I agree, this reflects practical experience.

I would like to add that IKEA does not provide an official lifespan for BILLY shelves. The durability depends greatly on the load and the environment. Some data from tests show that particleboard furniture can last well over 10 years with proper use and normal load.
Here are some tips to extend the lifespan:
- Occasionally tighten screws to maintain stability
- Avoid overloading shelves (maximum 15-30 kg per shelf)
- Keep the shelf away from direct moisture as much as possible
- Avoid uneven load distribution
These measures have a significant impact on longevity.
I agree completely, but it also depends on how each person handles it.

Thanks for the answers so far.
I have an additional question: Can anyone say if there is a difference in durability when the BILLY shelf is fixed to the wall compared to when it stands freely? Especially with a relatively tall unit (around 2 m [6 ft 7 in]), I wonder if the risk of stability loss and therefore wear is higher without wall mounting.
Maybe someone has long-term experience or detailed information on this?
Would this also be relevant if the shelf is mounted on the wall?
