ᐅ How long does a BILLY bookshelf typically last?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am now wondering how long such a shelf typically lasts with normal use – that is, for storing books in a home, neither heavily loaded nor mistreated. I am especially interested in its everyday lifespan, considering factors like material fatigue, structural stability, and frequency of use. Are there any experiences or even measurements available? How long can one realistically expect a Billy bookshelf to last before it weakens or shows signs of damage? I am also curious whether regular maintenance or certain placement locations can affect its durability.

Thanks in advance for your insights and experiences!

Hello foster,

Yes, wall anchoring definitely adds to the stability of the shelving unit. Especially for tall shelves like BILLY (about 2 meters (6.6 feet)), attaching them to the wall reduces the risk of tipping and decreases the stress on the joints between the shelf components.

Retightening screws and anchors is also recommended for anchored shelves, as temperature changes and regular use can cause the connections to loosen slightly. For shelves that bear heavy loads, regular retightening has a positive effect on their lifespan.

Can anyone say if there is a difference in durability when the BILLY shelf is attached to the wall compared to when it is free-standing?

In short: Yes, a wall-mounted shelf generally lasts longer and is more stable due to better fixation.

I always had my BILLY shelf attached to the wall, so I can definitely say: it makes a difference. No annoying wobbling, no fear of it tipping over, I feel safer.

Wall mounting ... usually keeps the shelf stable and durable for longer thanks to better fixation.

I think this also helps distribute the load more evenly across the material, since not only the joints have to bear all the weight. So yes, it surely extends the lifespan. And if you move, just check everything again and refasten it – a shelf doesn’t like to be constantly ‘wobbly’ anywhere 😉

All in all: wall mounting is recommended and contributes to durability. 🙂
