Hello everyone, I am planning to get an IKEA Hemnes furniture piece and wonder how easy the assembly really is for complete beginners. I have very little experience with furniture assembly and wanted to know if the Hemnes series is a good choice in this regard, or if it’s better to opt for other models due to the often quite detailed instructions. I am especially interested in tips on common pitfalls, the time needed for assembly, and whether any special tools are required. Who else has had similar experiences and can give me an assessment of how accessible Hemnes really is for beginners?

A important tip regarding the stability of the Hemnes dresser: Make sure to follow the correct order when assembling the side panels and the back panel, as this ensures the necessary stability. Also, tighten the screws with even torque to avoid warping. If you don’t have a torque wrench, use a sense of tightening that is firm but not too tight or too loose. Additionally, it is helpful to check whether the drawer slides are properly installed before inserting the drawers, as incorrect installation can cause problems later.

Without prior experience, the Hemnes dresser is doable if you take it step by step. Work systematically and avoid rushing any parts. And: patience is key. You hardly need any tools beyond the included Allen wrench.

Specifically, I was thinking of the Hemnes chest of drawers with 3-4 drawers, rather than a bed or large wardrobe unit.

Cool! The chest of drawers is a classic—really sturdy and not as complicated as you might think. Plus, if you play a playlist of your favorite songs while assembling it, the work will fly by 🎶😉. The key is to properly install the drawer slides; otherwise, you might get squeaking or rubbing later on. Other than that, enjoy it—building your own furniture is a lot of fun!

Thanks for the tip! Are there specific points where beginners often make the mistake of mixing up the order? I really want to avoid the whole Hemnes dresser becoming unstable in the end. The idea about torque is also very helpful – I will be careful with that. Even though the Allen key is included, I’ll try to develop a bit of a feel for tightening properly.

Exactly: This often happens with the back panels. Sometimes beginners tend to fix the back panel too early, before the side panels are properly aligned. While the back panel is important for stability, it locks the structure so firmly that later adjustments become almost impossible. Therefore, you should first install all the side screws and fit the drawer slides. Only when everything fits perfectly and moves smoothly should you attach the back panel. This way, you can avoid the cabinet becoming crooked or unstable.
