Hello everyone,

I have recently been thinking about getting an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe, mainly because of its good value for money. However, I wonder how durable these wardrobes actually are in everyday use when used daily.

Specifically, I am interested in how resistant the material and construction are, whether the hinges and handles can withstand constant opening and closing, and how well the wardrobe performs under somewhat higher loads (e.g., weight inside the wardrobe or frequent moving).

Does anyone have long-term experience or can share how long a Brimnes wardrobe typically lasts with regular use—such as in a bedroom or hallway—without major repairs or issues?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Thanks for the precise question! The Brimnes series handles daily use surprisingly well, considering it’s an affordable piece of furniture. The materials aren’t solid wood, but rather sturdy pressed particleboard with a melamine coating.

The hinges hold up surprisingly long under regular use, as do the drawer slides. Of course, you can tell the price in some finishing details—sometimes there’s a creak or a screw loosens—but nothing that can’t be fixed quickly.

A practical point is that spare parts are usually readily available at IKEA. With a bit of patience, you can easily get five years or more of everyday use out of a Brimnes cabinet. Mine even survived daily use by children’s hands in the bedroom. 😅

So: really durable for the price range, with the understanding that occasional tightening or part replacement may be necessary.

I have had a Brimnes wardrobe in the hallway for three years. Daily use shows on the handles, which can become a bit loose. Otherwise, it remains stable if you occasionally tighten the screws.

I can share some of my own experience as well! I’ve had the Brimnes wardrobe for about 4 years, and I have to say the quality is surprisingly good for the price. Of course, there is a slight smell from the particleboard at the beginning, and under very heavy load (I didn’t fully pack it, but used it quite a bit) you can see minimal pressure marks near the edges.

What I especially appreciate are the smooth-running drawers with some clearance, which allow frequent opening without everything getting stuck.

What was important to me: the design is simple but sturdy, and you can move the wardrobe around without damaging walls or it warping too much.

Conclusion: great for everyday use and normal loads, especially if you don’t overload it. For very heavy use or as a designer statement piece, I would recommend something else. 😊

I can confirm that. It’s important to regularly tighten the screws and avoid humid environments. Otherwise, there are no major issues.
