ᐅ How does the assembly of Malm drawers work?

Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of assembling the drawers of the IKEA Malm dresser set and have some uncertainties, especially regarding the assembly of the drawer boxes, the installation of the runners, and the proper use of the included fastening parts.

I am particularly interested in how the individual components – especially the side panels, the bottom, and the back panel of the drawer – should be precisely positioned and secured so that the drawer runs smoothly and remains stable afterwards. Is there a specific order or any special tips to keep in mind to ensure the runners do not catch and the drawer opens and closes easily?

I would really appreciate a detailed explanation or a step-by-step guide, preferably with advice on common mistakes or pitfalls during assembly. Thanks in advance!

Can anyone provide evidence on how much overtightening specifically affects the smoothness of operation?

From my own experience, if the screws are tightened too much, the side panels can warp or the wood around the screw holes can get slightly compressed – this causes the guide rails to be mounted slightly crooked.

This results in noticeable resistance when sliding the drawer. You often get a “catching” feeling when opening or closing.

Therefore, I recommend tightening the screws firmly by hand but not with maximum force – it’s better to adjust later if the drawer doesn’t run smoothly.

It also helps to test the drawer by pulling it out and pushing it back a few times and checking for resistance to identify where the problem is.

Thanks again to everyone!

I will now strictly follow the recommended sequence and pay special attention to the alignment of the side panels, I understand that.

One last question: What about installing the handle recess? Should it be mounted before or after inserting the drawer? I’ve seen that some install it only after the drawer is fully assembled. Is there a clear recommendation that makes the installation easier?

The handle recess is usually installed only after the drawer is fully assembled and in place.

This has the advantage that you can better grip and control the drawer while aligning and attaching the handle. It also helps prevent damage or scratches to the handle recess during drawer assembly.

Some people do install the handle beforehand, but this increases the risk of the recess shifting or being damaged.

My tip: Assemble the drawer completely, slide it in, then attach the handle recess.
