Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of assembling the drawers of the IKEA Malm dresser set and have some uncertainties, especially regarding the assembly of the drawer boxes, the installation of the runners, and the proper use of the included fastening parts.

I am particularly interested in how the individual components – especially the side panels, the bottom, and the back panel of the drawer – should be precisely positioned and secured so that the drawer runs smoothly and remains stable afterwards. Is there a specific order or any special tips to keep in mind to ensure the runners do not catch and the drawer opens and closes easily?

I would really appreciate a detailed explanation or a step-by-step guide, preferably with advice on common mistakes or pitfalls during assembly. Thanks in advance!

Hello Bauli,

When assembling the MALM drawers, the order of assembly is really important. First, you should properly align the side panels with the designated holes. Make sure the metal drawer slides are positioned perfectly straight on the inside of the side panels.

Next, insert the bottom panel, which is usually just pressed in place and not screwed, so it won’t wobble later. After that, attach the back panel, which must be fixed securely—IKEAs often use small nails or special clips here to ensure stability.

The drawer slides are then attached to the outside of the side panels. It’s important that they are mounted parallel and at the same height—using a tape measure or a level can help. When sliding the drawer in, make sure the rollers glide smoothly in the tracks; otherwise, it will catch.

A common mistake is over-tightening the screws or installing the back panel at an angle. Both can cause issues with smooth operation.

Summary:
1. Align side panels with metal drawer slides
2. Insert bottom panel, just press in place
3. Secure back panel, make sure it’s not crooked
4. Mount drawer slides on the outside, exactly parallel
5. Insert drawer and check smooth movement

That should do it! 🙂

Oh, it’s really great that you’re paying such close attention to the assembly! 🙂

I once spent an entire afternoon putting together MALM drawers without any problems. The rails are usually the tricky part. My advice: take your time and check after each step that everything is perfectly aligned.

Even if the bottom panel is only slotted in, it shouldn’t wobble – that can cause serious issues later on. But don’t worry, with a bit of patience anyone can do it! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well and you end up with a smoothly operating drawer! 🙂

The rails are actually the real issue.

I agree, but I would like to ask: On what basis do you assess that the rails are the main problem?

My impression is that, with MALM drawers, the correct alignment of the side panels and the precise installation of the back panel are often underestimated.

A typical mistake is overtightening the screws or installing the back panel crookedly.

That sounds reasonable, but can anyone provide evidence of how overtightening specifically affects smooth operation?

I also think it is important not only to check the exact positioning but to consider the condition of the drawer slides – for example, whether lubrication is necessary or if the quality tends to vary.

A discussion on this could help clarify solutions to construction issues even further.

Thanks for the helpful advice so far!

Regarding @CORYGAU's question: I’m actually unsure how much the torque on the screws affects the mechanics, since IKEA doesn’t provide detailed specifications. Also, with the back panel, I had the impression that it’s often installed too loosely.

Do you think it’s advisable to lubricate the drawer slides? I didn’t find any instructions about this in the IKEA manual, but maybe there are tips to improve smooth movement.

And one more question for clarification: If the back panel is really that important, how can I tell if it’s seated correctly and ensuring stability?

I appreciate any tips.

Do you think the guide rails should be lubricated as well?

This is generally not recommended by IKEA – the guide rails are designed with plastic rollers intended for maintenance-free operation. Applying lubricants can actually be counterproductive, as it attracts dust and dirt, which can contaminate the sliding components.

Regarding the back panel: it plays a crucial role in the structural stability of the drawer. It is usually fixed with small nails or special clips that ensure it sits flush against the back edges of the side panels. A loosely fitted back panel can cause the drawer to deform, making it difficult to open and close.

Proper installation can be recognized by the back panel having no play, no gaps inward or outward, and being securely connected to the underlying structure. During assembly, it should not only be placed in but also properly fastened.

About tightening the screws: overtightening should be avoided, as it can damage the wood material or weaken the joint. Although IKEA typically does not specify a recommended torque, the screw head should sit firmly against the wood without causing the material to indent.
