Hello everyone, I would like to know the best way to disassemble IKEA Malm furniture as easily as possible without causing any damage. Specifically, I have a MALM chest of drawers with several drawers that I need to take apart for transport. Some screws are already visible, but I am concerned there might be hidden fasteners that I could overlook. Is there a proven step-by-step guide for disassembly or any special tips on what to watch out for? Thanks for your help!

It is best to start by completely removing the drawers. Then you can carefully pull off the back panel, which is often only fixed with nails. After that, you can usually detach the side panels by unscrewing the screws along the edges. Be careful not to overtighten the screws.

That’s brilliant—removing the drawers first makes the disassembly much easier! 🙂 I once took apart my MALM and can only say: patience pays off! Removing the back panel can be a bit tricky sometimes, but with gentle force it works perfectly. It’s best to use a flat screwdriver to carefully pry it open. Good luck, you’ll definitely manage it!!

Exactly, you need a bit of feel for it. I once used an old folding ruler, which is perfect for sliding the back panel in and carefully prying it loose. And when you’re at it, treat yourself to a coffee – dismantling furniture is almost like meditation 😉 So take your time, everything fits back together if you pay close attention.

For the professional disassembly of the MALM chest of drawers, follow this sequence: first, completely remove the drawers, then carefully take off the back panel. The back panel is usually fixed with narrow nails, which should be loosened using a small prying tool. Next, remove the visible screws on the side panels, paying close attention to the connections at the top and bottom. Avoid using unnecessary force to prevent damaging the material. This procedure is also documented in the respective assembly instructions provided by IKEA.

One more tip: Screws you need to remove first are usually located on the sides. Sometimes there are plastic connectors that need to be pulled apart. Gently moving the individual parts can also help to release the connections.
