Hello everyone, I would like to know the best way to disassemble IKEA Malm furniture as easily as possible without causing any damage. Specifically, I have a MALM chest of drawers with several drawers that I need to take apart for transport. Some screws are already visible, but I am concerned there might be hidden fasteners that I could overlook. Is there a proven step-by-step guide for disassembly or any special tips on what to watch out for? Thanks for your help!

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to disassembling the Malm dresser:

1. Fully pull out and remove all drawers.
2. Remove the back panel: This is usually only nailed in place. It’s best to carefully loosen the nails using a small pry tool.
3. Look for any remaining screws on the side panels, often located in the corners.
4. Loosen the connecting fittings, such as dowels or metal brackets.
5. Gently pull the individual parts apart.

Common mistakes include applying force too quickly or not removing the back panel, which provides stability. If you follow each step carefully, the furniture will remain intact and can be easily reassembled later.

It is important to completely empty the drawers before disassembling and to place the entire dresser on a clean, stable surface. Another tip: remember or take a photo of the positions of the screws and joints to make reassembling easier. Avoid sudden or rushed movements during removal, especially since the back panel is very delicate.

Thank you for the helpful tips! I am still wondering if there are differences in the construction of newer MALM models that could make disassembly more difficult. Are special tools required, for example? I have also noticed that some connections include plastic clips – is it possible to disconnect these without causing damage? I definitely want to avoid breaking anything.

Yes, IKEA has slightly modified the design, for example by adding snap-fit connections and new plastic dowels that hold better. These are usually designed to be removable without damage, but you need to work very carefully.

A good hex key (Allen wrench) or a Phillips screwdriver is usually sufficient. For the plastic clips, a flat, sturdy lever is helpful, but be careful not to cause any damage.

Exactly, using the right screwdrivers makes removal much easier! And don’t worry about the plastic clips—they’re quite sturdy if you work slowly :-)
