Hello everyone,

I have noticed that the drawers of my IKEA Malm dresser are increasingly squeaking when opened. The noise seems to come from the drawer slides. I assume that the material is rubbing in some areas or that the guides need slight adjustment.

I am interested in knowing what to consider specifically when maintaining or repairing a Malm dresser to fix the squeaking without affecting its function.

Are there any special care instructions, suitable lubricants that can be used, or perhaps known weak points of this dresser that I should be aware of?

I appreciate any tips related to technical details and safe handling!

Squeaking in Malm dressers usually occurs due to the absence or drying out of lubricants on the metal runners.

Important note: Do not use oils that attract dust, such as WD-40, as this can cause the runners to become dirty over time. Instead, use silicone spray or Teflon spray specifically designed for furniture and metal guides.

Before lubricating, the runners should be thoroughly cleaned—using a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning agent to remove dust and dirt.

Additionally, check if screws and fasteners are securely tightened, as loose parts can also cause noise.

An important addition:

In older models, the plastic slide piece on the inside sides of the drawers may be damaged or worn.

In such cases, ordering replacement parts or carefully attaching a sliding felt can help reduce friction.

Also, make sure the drawers are not overloaded, as excessive weight can put more strain on the guiding components and increase squeaking.

Cleaning and lubrication are the first steps.

Use silicone spray, not oil.

Check screws.

Inspect sliding components.

What helped me was completely removing the drawer and inspecting the runners for any damage.

Sometimes the guide rails can bend slightly, or small wood chips can cause noise.

Also, make sure to wipe the runners dry before applying lubricant.

Thank you for the initial helpful tips.

I have already roughly cleaned the runners with paper towels to remove the worst of the dust – but that made hardly any difference.

What I would like to know: Is the use of lubricants generally unproblematic for the IKEA Malm dresser, or is there a risk that the warranty or material quality could be affected by using the wrong maintenance products?

This suggests that standard products are not always suitable – would a pure Teflon spray, for example, be a safe choice instead of WD-40? Or does anyone have specific experience with IKEA furniture?
