I have a rather specific question about my IKEA Malm dresser, which I have been using for several months and have noticed an annoying noise: Why does the Malm dresser squeak when opening the drawers? I have observed the problem, and it happens every time I pull a drawer, especially when opening it gently or more forcefully. I suspect it might be related to the runners or the materials used, but I would like to hear your opinion on what exactly could be causing this. Should I apply lubricant, or are there other factors I should consider? Thank you in advance for your help!

This is a classic! Usually, it's just friction from the runners or other contact points causing the noise. Applying a bit of lubricant can work wonders. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean your dresser has any defect. Most of the time, tiny fibers or small dirt particles have gotten stuck there. Just treat it with an appropriate dry lubricant or silicone spray, and the noise should stop. 🙂

The squeaking usually comes from wood-on-wood contact or from metal tracks that are not lubricated. Simply apply a light coating of grease to the rails or sides.

The typical squeaking of the Malm dresser when opening is often caused by the sliding surfaces of the drawer runners. IKEA uses simple plastic and metal glides, which can produce noise when surfaces are dry or have dust buildup. Targeted cleaning of the runners followed by treatment with a silicone-based lubricant significantly reduces friction. Please avoid using oil-based lubricants, as these attract dust and can worsen the problem in the long term.

Also make sure that the drawers are properly aligned and secured. If they hang unevenly, this can also cause squeaking.

Check whether the screws on the drawer slides are tight. Loose screws can cause friction and therefore noise.
