Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased a set of Malm wooden furniture (IKEA) and now want to clean it as gently as possible. The challenge is that I don’t want to damage the surface because it is lacquered and can quickly become dull or spotted. My specific question is: How can you properly and thoroughly clean Malm wood without roughening the lacquer or causing damage?

I am particularly interested in the right choice of cleaning products, but also in the best cleaning technique. Should I use a dry cloth, a slightly damp microfiber cloth, or perhaps a special wood care product?

Are there any ingredients that should definitely be avoided—such as alcohol, ammonia, or harsh household cleaners? I want to prevent the surface from becoming dull or discolored.

I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially if you already have Malm wood furniture or similar lacquered wood surfaces.

Thank you in advance!

Proper cleaning of spruce wood:

1. Remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth
2. Wipe lightly damp with water and mild soap
3. Do not use harsh cleaners or alcohol!
4. Wipe dry to avoid water stains

This is completely sufficient.

Additional information on cleaning:

The finish is a thin layer on the wood that can withstand mechanical and chemical stress, but not indefinitely.

Use the following cleaning method:

- Dry cloth to remove dust
- Damp cloth with lukewarm water and mild detergent
- Avoid soaking the surface
- Wipe dry immediately afterward
- Do not use harsh cleaners or solvents

This will help maintain the surface’s durability over time.

Also: If stains are very stubborn, treat them locally. Avoid wet cleaning large areas too often to protect the finish.

Hello Floman7,

I can only agree with the previous comments but would like to highlight one more point: room temperature and humidity also play a role. Using a too wet cleaning cloth in high humidity can damage the paint layer more quickly.

For Malm furniture, I recommend:

- Cleaning at normal room temperature (about 20-22°C (68-72°F))
- Slightly dampening the microfiber cloth, not soaking wet
- Making sure no moisture remains on the surface after cleaning

Also, when cleaning, be careful not to apply too much pressure, especially on corners or edges, as the paint is often thinner and more vulnerable there.

If you want to use specific cleaning products, look for those labeled “suitable for painted furniture” and always test on an inconspicuous spot first.

Good luck!

"Let me know which cleaning products you have used so far and if you have noticed any damage"

Thank you for the detailed explanation, Surela. So far, I have mostly used standard household cleaners that are not specifically designed for wood, usually containing some amount of alcohol. Unfortunately, I have already noticed a few dull spots, especially on areas that are frequently touched.

That’s why I’ve been unsure whether I should completely avoid the products I’ve been using and how to best refresh the surface without damaging the protective lacquer coating.

Your advice about using mild dish soap and a microfiber cloth is very helpful – I will follow that from now on. Is there any wood care product that can be safely used on polyurethane-coated surfaces, or is it better to avoid that altogether?

I appreciate any tips!
