Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat unusual question that has been bothering me recently regarding my Malm bed from IKEA: Why does the Malm bed only squeak occasionally and not all the time?
The construction is quite simple – wooden frame, slatted base, screws – but the squeaking occurs irregularly, sometimes not at all, and sometimes it’s very annoying. I have already tried tightening the screws and placing the bed on a firm surface. Still, the noise sometimes comes back without me making any changes to the bed.
I’m especially interested in the mechanisms behind this intermittent squeaking: Could it be due to material tensions, moisture, temperature, or perhaps humidity? Possibly movement or even the mattress play a role?
Does anyone have experience or deeper knowledge why a basically stable bed frame would make noises only sporadically?
I look forward to your insights and explanations!

These occasional squeaking noises are actually a common issue with wooden frames like the Malm bed. Generally, such sounds occur due to friction between wooden parts or at the joints.
The fact that it happens “only sometimes” suggests that the tension between the wooden components or screws changes slightly—depending on how the bed is loaded or moved. Moisture and temperature fluctuations also affect wood, causing it to expand or shrink, which influences the fit of the joints. Especially at night, when turning over or getting up, these minimal movements can be enough to cause squeaking.
My advice: In addition to checking the screws, try applying some wax or silicone spray on the contact points. This reduces friction and often significantly cuts down the squeaking.
If you like, I can also provide a detailed guide on lubricating the joints.

Haha, the Malm bed secret! 🙂
The bed is like a stubborn teenager: sometimes it doesn’t make a sound, and then suddenly it squeaks loudly, just like that.
Seriously: wood is alive and changes with the climate. Some nights are just noisier, especially when it’s humid outside or you toss and turn a lot in your sleep.
Try applying some furniture wax or a good silicone spray on the joints – the bed will be as quiet as a little Buddha 😉.

As a complement:
This is really the key point. In a household with constantly changing humidity levels, I have often noticed that the noises occur more frequently, especially during sudden temperature changes.
Also, movements that slightly loosen screws, for example, cause the friction surfaces to rub briefly against each other instead of being rigidly connected. This is exactly when the squeaking occurs sporadically.
Regularly tightening the screws and occasional lubrication can help prevent this.

I would add this: Precisely because the bed only squeaks occasionally, it is especially important to pay attention to changing loads. For example, if you lie down very gently, nothing squeaks. But when you shift position or move abruptly, the forces are distributed differently, and the bed responds by squeaking.
