ᐅ Malm bed squeaks when moved on uneven floors – any solutions?

Hello everyone,

I have been using an IKEA Malm bed for some time now, which is generally very sturdy. However, when moving, especially if the floor under the bed is uneven, it often produces an annoying creaking noise that is quite disruptive. I have already tried rebuilding the bed and using different types of underlays, but the problem persists.

My question is:
How can I permanently fix the creaking noise on my Malm bed, particularly when it occurs on uneven flooring? Are there practical solutions or proven tips to prevent these noises caused by movement?

If you have experience with Malm beds or similar models, I would appreciate detailed advice! Thanks in advance.

From my experience, I can contribute the following: In Malm beds, squeaking usually occurs at the connection points between the slatted frame support and the bed frame.

If the floor is uneven, the bed is put under stress, which strains these connections.

My recommendation:
1. Check whether the slatted frame rests firmly and has no room for movement.
2. Attach thin felt strips or thin foam rubber to the surfaces where the slatted frame rests.
3. Use supports with higher elasticity, such as rubber pads with a felt covering, under the feet.

This helps to distribute the force more evenly, keep the stresses low, and effectively reduce squeaking noises.

It is not a one-time assembly fix but rather a combination of cleaning, adjustment, and soundproofing.

Brief and precise:

In my opinion, the cause of squeaking related to uneven floors can be eliminated by installing adjustable furniture leveling feet. These feet allow the bed to be aligned perfectly horizontal, ensuring it stands on a stable foundation.

Furthermore, it is important to make sure that all frame connections are properly tightened, as a loose frame under tension will definitely creak.

Using self-adhesive felt pads at the contact points between the slatted frame and the bed frame can also help reduce noise.

These are proven standard measures in furniture assembly that I often recommend in my work as a furniture specialist.

Some time ago, I bought a Malm bed myself and noticed that the connections between the headboard, footboard, and side panels have slight play due to the metal brackets when there is movement.

This is an important point.

To add: With furniture like the Malm, slight rocking can also occur if the slatted frame is not properly secured on its supports.

Some users have reported that installing additional screws or metal brackets (for example, small corner braces from a hardware store) has provided a long-term improvement.

Additionally, it is a good idea to check the screws again after a few weeks, as wood can compress and slightly warp under load.

Another tip: A thin layer of felt or foam rubber between the frame and the slatted frame can effectively reduce vibrations and noise. It is important that the material stays dry, as moisture can increase the noise.

I would also recommend checking whether uneven flooring causes a noticeable height difference and whether using a new underlay or even a leveling mat makes sense.

This should noticeably reduce any squeaking.

I have already tried rebuilding the bed and also tested different base materials, but the problem persists.

Thank you for this information; it makes the assessment a bit easier since many possible causes could have been involved.

So construction errors can be ruled out?

If so, I would recommend reinforcing the joints with small felt or foam pads, as previously mentioned, and especially checking the support brackets of the slatted frame.

A special option for IKEA furniture is also the use of “furniture rail lubricants” – these are thin dry lubrication strips that reduce wear from friction without using oils.

Are the noises occurring during any movement in the bed, including shifting against walls, or only under heavier loads like getting in and out of bed?

This could help narrow down the exact source of the noise.

You could also try placing a solid base completely under the bed, for example a large board that levels the floor.

That was also the solution for me!

A base that effectively “stabilizes the bed in a floating way” completely stopped the squeaking, because it dampened the vibrations caused by the uneven floor.

However, the base must be well ventilated to prevent moisture buildup. I made a mistake once and it resulted in a slight musty smell afterward.

Therefore: For laminate or hardwood flooring, a relatively thin but solid and dry wooden board works best. It’s very important to include a protective intermediate layer, such as felt or a thin foam rubber mat.

Small effort, big impact.

Thank you for all the detailed contributions!

Regarding the floor quality: it is an older laminate with slight unevenness of about 3-5 mm (0.1-0.2 inches) distributed across the bed support surface. No deep dents, but enough to make the bed wobble slightly.

I will check all the screws again, try the felt pads, and for more significant unevenness, add a stabilizing wooden board underneath as recommended.

I also find the tip about using dry lubricant and metal brackets to increase stability interesting.

I will provide feedback here once I have tried something. Thanks again to everyone for the thorough and helpful advice! 🙂
