Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased a set of Malm wooden furniture (IKEA) and now want to clean it as gently as possible. The challenge is that I don’t want to damage the surface because it is lacquered and can quickly become dull or spotted. My specific question is: How can you properly and thoroughly clean Malm wood without roughening the lacquer or causing damage?

I am particularly interested in the right choice of cleaning products, but also in the best cleaning technique. Should I use a dry cloth, a slightly damp microfiber cloth, or perhaps a special wood care product?

Are there any ingredients that should definitely be avoided—such as alcohol, ammonia, or harsh household cleaners? I want to prevent the surface from becoming dull or discolored.

I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially if you already have Malm wood furniture or similar lacquered wood surfaces.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Floman7,

Your question is really important because I once tried scrubbing my painted wood with too much cleaning product and – boom – a dull surface! 😅

First of all: microfiber cloths are your best friends, but only slightly damp, never soaking wet. Use lukewarm water and maybe a few drops of mild dish soap. Avoid harsh cleaners, especially those containing alcohol or ammonia.

A good tip is to wipe again with a dry, soft cloth after cleaning to protect the paint from water spots.

And hey, from time to time you can also use special wood care products that are compatible with painted surfaces – they help restore the shine.

Good luck and no stress, wood is patient, but paint usually isn’t 😉

Hello Floman7,

I would like to address your question in more detail, as the proper care of painted wood can indeed be quite a science.

First of all, it is essential to know the type of paint. Malm furniture from IKEA is usually sealed with a PU (polyurethane) coating, which is relatively durable but not indestructible.

When cleaning, the first step is to remove loose dust with a dry microfiber cloth. Then you can use a damp microfiber cloth, preferably with lukewarm water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Important: Avoid strongly alkaline or acidic cleaners, as they can damage the coating.

That is absolutely correct, as too much moisture can potentially damage the paint layer or cause the wood to swell.

Furthermore, you should never use abrasive sponges or cleaning agents with abrasive particles – these will scratch the coating.

Let me know which cleaning products you have used so far and whether you have noticed any damage – that would help make a more precise recommendation.

Interesting question – however, I think the whole effort is often exaggerated. At least when it comes to IKEA furniture like Malm.

Sure, the finish can be affected, but honestly: who cleans with ammonia or harsh chemicals? A normally damp cloth is usually more than enough.

And if you’re worried about dull spots, you probably wouldn’t use your furniture in everyday life anyway. Furniture is meant to be used – a bit of wear and tear is normal, no matter how careful you are.

That sounds academic, but I say: just keep it clean and avoid messes — that’s enough.

For those who want it easier: ditch the special products, clean rarely but thoroughly, and the finish will easily last.

Hello Floman7,

I completely understand you, as painted wood indeed requires careful handling.

In general, I recommend always removing dust from Malm furniture with a soft, dry cloth to avoid scratches. Afterwards, you can use a slightly damp cloth. Never use harsh cleaners or those containing aggressive ingredients like alcohol, solvents, or ammonia – they will damage the paint.

For more stubborn dirt, there are special wood and furniture cleaners suitable for painted surfaces. However, be sure to read the product description carefully to ensure it does not contain substances that could harm the paint.

A tip from my experience: after cleaning, do not use wax or oil treatments on Malm furniture. These pieces are usually coated with a protective plastic-based paint that is incompatible with wax.

In my opinion, less is often more – better to clean gently several times than to scrub hard once.

I’m happy to offer more specific help if you provide more details about the stains.

Good morning,

Regarding cleaning products: The surface of Malm wood furniture is typically sealed with a polyurethane lacquer, which provides some resistance to common stains.

Recommendation: Use only slightly damp microfiber cloths combined with mild cleaning agents. Products containing solvents, ammonia, abrasive substances, or alcohol are not recommended, as they can soften and swell the lacquer layer, leaving visible damage.

For maintenance: Do not apply waxes or oils after cleaning, as the plastic lacquer does not absorb them, which can result in residue.

Additionally, I recommend avoiding the use of sharp edges or sponges to prevent micro-scratches.

These guidelines are based on the chemical compatibility and mechanical stress of the lacquer.
