ᐅ How do you adjust misaligned BILLY doors?

Hello everyone,

I recently noticed that one of the doors on my Billy shelf is hanging unevenly and no longer closes properly. The door seems to be catching slightly on the upper hinge, and the gap between the door and the shelf is uneven. My question is: How do you properly realign crooked Billy doors?

Is there a specific procedure or special tools needed? Are there any precautions to ensure the adjustment stays in place and doesn’t cause any damage? I want to avoid turning screws blindly and making the situation worse.

Thanks in advance for your tips and experience!

Could you specify exactly which model you have?\

This is an important point, as there are indeed differences in the BILLY shelves and their door mechanisms.

In addition to the hinge itself, you should check the vertical alignment: Turn the adjustment screws on both the top and bottom hinges in small increments (no more than a quarter turn per attempt). Always test the door closing between adjustments.

Some users also report that sometimes the hinge screws have loosened or the door has become slightly warped due to constant use. In these cases, additional fine-tuning can help, but in extreme cases, inserting a wooden shim (spacer) can serve as a small corrective measure.

Finally, it’s worth checking the shelf frame for unevenness, as a tilted base can make adjustments considerably more difficult.

First, you should check whether the screws on the upper or lower hinge are loose.

Exactly, that's always the first step. Check the screws, tighten them, then adjust the set screws.

It is also recommended to open and close the door several times after adjustment, so it settles more smoothly.
