Hello everyone, I am planning to mount several IKEA Billy bookcases on drywall partitions in my apartment. Since these walls are less load-bearing than solid walls, I want to ensure the installation is stable and secure so that heavy books and decorations can be supported without any issues.

I am especially interested in which anchors or fasteners you would recommend, whether there are any specific mounting techniques, and if there are any important considerations regarding load distribution. It would also be helpful to know which mistakes to avoid to prevent any damage to the drywall.

Thank you in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hey, great question! Drywall can be tricky when you want to hang heavy items. I usually use hollow wall anchors like molly bolts or special metal toggle bolts – these provide excellent support because they expand behind the drywall.

It’s important not to just drill in at one point and try to hold the load there. Instead, distribute the weight as much as possible by using multiple anchors. And yes, don’t worry too much – it usually holds better than you might expect! 🙂

For Billy shelves mounted on drywall, I recommend using metal cavity anchors or large expansion anchors. Attach the shelves at multiple points to distribute the load.

Make sure to check whether there is a wooden or metal substructure behind the drywall. If there is, attach directly to the substructure. Otherwise, use only high-quality hollow wall anchors.

Honestly, aren’t those just quick fixes? In my opinion, if you really want to be safe, install a proper wooden batten horizontally and screw the shelf into that. Otherwise, the drywall will be full of holes and have unsightly cracks within two years at the latest.

I’m not a fan of half measures with drywall – either do it properly or don’t do it at all.

The idea of using a wooden batten as a substructure sounds interesting and practical – but I’m concerned about how to securely fasten the batten when there’s only drywall behind it. I assume I would need to locate the underlying framework or metal studs behind the drywall?

Are there any tools or techniques to accurately find the position of the studs? And how much weight can realistically be supported if you screw directly into the studs?
