Hello everyone! I have several Billy bookcases from IKEA at home and want to make sure they are secured properly to prevent tipping – especially with children or pets in the house. I’m not only interested in the typical wall fastenings but also in additional measures that could make these shelves more stable and safe. What methods, materials, or installation tips can you recommend to ensure the Billy bookcases stand securely? I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Make sure to drill only into solid walls like masonry or wooden studs

Thanks for the advice – my wall is just skim-coated drywall, so I’m unsure how to do this properly without applying too much pressure.

Use larger heavy-duty anchors and matching longer screws

Can you recommend specific anchors that hold well in thin drywall? I’m worried that with regular anchors the shelf might eventually come loose from the wall.

Also, what do you think about adding extra bracing between the shelf and the ceiling, as usbla suggests? Is that necessary or overkill?

Regarding your question about drywall: For Billy shelves, I recommend using anti-tip brackets specifically designed for shelving units. These work with metal or plastic clamps that distribute the pressure over a larger surface area.

With very thin walls, it makes sense to reinforce the shelf mounting with sturdy metal cavity anchors. The small screws included with IKEA products are suitable for solid walls but not for drywall.

I see this in a nuanced way. With children or pets, additional bracing noticeably increases safety. If you load your shelf lightly, the wall mounting is usually sufficient.

Great question! I secured my Billy bookcase walls to the wall using metal straps and even anchored them slightly into the ceiling – this gives an excellent sense of safety!

It’s really not difficult at all, and you feel much more comfortable knowing the shelf is rock solid! 🙂

Also, make sure not to overload the shelves; it’s surprising how much weight a shelf can hold, but overloading is a safety hazard. So it’s better to use a double support from the start! ;-)

Always use the included fuse and make sure to use metal hollow wall anchors when installing in drywall.

For added stability, place rubber pads under the feet and ensure the floor is even.

For thin drywall, I recommend so-called Molly bolts, which are metal hollow-wall anchors that expand behind the panel. They provide significantly more holding power than plastic anchors.

It’s not mandatory, but in my opinion, a sensible option if the shelf is tall and wide or will be heavily loaded. When in doubt, better too much safety than too little.

The important thing is that the shelf’s load is transferred to the wall, not just to the floor or feet. This helps prevent accidents.
