Hello everyone, I recently bought some Billy shelves from IKEA and now want to securely fix them in my apartment to prevent accidents. Specifically, I’m interested in the best way to attach the shelves to the wall, especially when dealing with different wall types (concrete, drywall, etc.). Which fastening materials are recommended? Are there any tips or special mounting kits that are particularly reliable? I have done some research myself but haven’t found much about truly sturdy solutions. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello, I always secure my Billy shelves using the wall brackets supplied by IKEA, plus dowels and screws suitable for the type of wall. For drywall, I use special cavity anchors; for concrete, standard expansion anchors. Important: Always fix the shelf to the wall firmly, do not just place it on the floor.

A good tip is to carefully check the wall surface before installation. For drywall panels, it is advisable to use expansion anchors or hollow wall anchors for better support. For concrete or brick walls, plastic anchors combined with appropriate screws work best. Additionally, I would recommend securing the shelves near the floor to prevent slipping – for example, with non-slip pads or felt-tipped feet.

Thanks for the initial feedback! @JONSON, your tip about the anti-slip pads sounds interesting – have you tried them yourself? Also, I would like to know how to proceed with older walls, which are often less stable. Is it sufficient to use standard anchors and screws, or is it better to rely on specialized systems?

For older walls, I would always recommend using heavy-duty anchors if possible. They provide significantly more security than standard plastic plugs. The only important thing is that the wall does not have any crumbling areas.

I think it’s great that you want to prioritize safety so carefully! Especially with Billy shelves, which can be quite tall, wall mounting is really important to prevent tipping. My advice: definitely use the supplied mounting kits from IKEA and supplement them with suitable wall plugs depending on your wall type. For drywall, use cavity anchors; for concrete, use regular wall plugs; and if the wall surface is uneven, you can level it with filler before drilling. This improves load-bearing capacity. Regarding older buildings: always check before drilling whether the wall is strong enough, as heavy-duty anchors can fail if the substrate is weak.
