Hello everyone, I am planning to securely mount my IKEA Hemnes shelves on various walls in my apartment. Since the furniture is relatively large and heavy, I don’t want to compromise on safety. Most of my walls are drywall with some sections made of solid masonry. I am mainly interested in: which fasteners are suitable for the different wall types? How deep and at what distance should the screws be placed? Are there specific brackets or angles that are recommended? And how can I prevent the shelf from tipping over or loosening over time? I have already read some general guides, but I am looking for as specific and practical advice as possible that relates directly to Hemnes shelves. Thank you in advance for your help!

Yes, exactly. Attach the mounting points as high as possible to effectively reduce tipping. Additionally, make sure to tighten the screws firmly to prevent loosening due to vibrations. For walls with drywall, it is advisable, whenever possible, to use reinforcement behind the wall or screw directly into the stud.

Quick update: I have decided to mount my Hemnes shelves on a drywall with metal studs. What is the best way to locate the position of the metal studs for the anchors? Is a simple stud finder sufficient, or should I consider anything else based on the drill holes on the back of the shelf? I want to avoid drilling in the wrong spot just because the holes are there.

A stud finder that detects metal studs is the best tool for the job. Mark the stud positions on the wall and align them with the drilling holes on the shelf. If necessary, make small adjustments to the drilling holes, provided you rely on secure fastening deep within the stud. Simply drilling into the drywall without anchors is not a stable solution.

This is a very important question. A stud finder is often reliable, but with metal stud walls, inaccuracies can occur. It is crucial to measure the position of the profile flanges precisely and include them in the planning stage.

Additionally, I recommend not relying solely on the pre-drilled holes in the furniture piece, as these are designed for solid walls and may not always align well with the actual profile spacing. It can be useful to plan the attachment points flexibly or use your own metal brackets for better load distribution.

In any case, you should also check that the shelf’s load does not exceed the maximum allowable weight, since incorrect installation can lead to safety hazards.

I mounted my Hemnes shelves on a drywall with metal studs, similar to the method described, and just wanted to say: with the right anchors and a few extra metal brackets, it feels really secure! 😊 Especially after checking that the screws actually grip the metal studs, I could fully load the shelf without any worries. So: don’t be intimidated, it’s completely doable and the result looks sturdy too! Keep it up!
