Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to set up the IKEA Brimnes shelving unit at home. My problem is that the floor at the intended location is not completely level – there are slight uneven areas and gentle slopes, which make it difficult to place the shelf properly. As a result, the shelves are not perfectly horizontal and sometimes wobble.

I have already considered using small spacers or wedges, but I would like to know if anyone here has more experience and precise advice on how to best secure or adjust the shelves of the BRIMNES unit to ensure they stand stable and secure. Are there any special mounting aids or tricks to safely fix the shelves even when the surface is uneven?

I would really appreciate helpful instructions, personal experiences, or any warnings if there are things to be especially careful about!

Thanks in advance!

It is best to use small furniture pads or felt glides under the feet to compensate for uneven surfaces. Alternatively, you can cut wooden wedges and place them under the base. It is important that the shelf does not wobble – otherwise, the stability will be compromised, and damage may occur.

Hello FEJEPA,

this issue is indeed a bit tricky because BRIMNES shelves are not specifically designed to be installed on uneven floors – they are mainly made for smooth and flat surfaces. Still, there are a few ways to address the problem:

- First, check with a spirit level how severe the unevenness or slope really is.
- Small wooden or rubber wedges can be placed directly under the shelf feet to level the unit. Make sure to prioritize stability when doing this.
- If the shelves wobble: small metal brackets or angle connectors can be attached inside the shelving unit to secure the shelves better and reduce movement.
- You can also buy special adjustable furniture feet that compensate for height differences – this is often the best solution for a sloped floor.

It is important that after assembly everything stands securely, with no risk of the shelf tipping over or twisting. You might also consider sticking small felt or rubber pads under the feet, which can slightly compress to even out minor irregularities.

If you like, I can provide some sources or go into more detail about the materials. I hope this helps you for now!

That definitely sounds like a solid idea. A few months ago, I had a similar problem with my bookshelf and was initially a bit overwhelmed.

From my own experience, what I found particularly helpful was not just the technical solution, but also the feeling of creating a stable and durable adjustment. At first, I tried to improvise with cotton and paper, which didn’t really help and was more frustrating.

If you like, I also recommend working with a second person to level the shelves and place the feet or wedges exactly in the right spots. This makes the process easier and you can immediately see if everything fits.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you!

Wedges or adjustable feet are really the best solution. For the BRIMNES shelf unit, I recommend paying close attention to the placement of the legs and compensating specifically for any unevenness.

You can also try securing the shelves inside with clamps if they feel loose. It’s better to make small adjustments step by step—using shims that are too thick can make the shelf unstable.

In the end, the important thing is that neither the shelf unit nor the floor gets damaged. Just align everything carefully, step by step.
