Hello everyone, I am planning to furnish my small apartment with IKEA Brimnes furniture. Since my room is only about 12 square meters (130 square feet), I am looking for ways to make the most of the Brimnes series—especially in terms of storage, space layout, and multifunctionality. My main focus is on how to practically expand the limited space using the modular elements without overwhelming the room. Are there any tips on how to combine these pieces effectively, for example with drawers under the bed or wall-mounted units, to maximize ergonomics and organization? I am hoping for practical, detailed advice based on experience or even creative suggestions!

Your question is very well formulated and shows that you already have a clear idea! To make the most of Brimnes in a small space, you should especially focus on using the drawers under the bed. These are ideal for storing items you don’t need every day, such as bedding or occasional clothing. The large wardrobes can also be customized with many removable shelves and rods. It is advisable to choose furniture with a simple design to avoid making your small space feel cluttered. Do you have a specific floor plan or measurements that we should consider?

Thank you in advance for the many helpful initial responses! To be a bit more specific: my room is rectangular, approximately 3.5 x 3.5 meters (11.5 x 11.5 feet). Doors and windows are on different walls, so I can move the furniture around modularly. I would like to create as much storage space as possible for bedding, other clothing, and also a bit for technology/cable management. The idea of wall shelves sounds good since one wall above the bed is free. Can the shelves from the Brimnes series be mounted securely enough to hold heavier items? How durable are the drawers with regular use? Are there any experiences regarding their load capacity, especially in small, cramped rooms?

Is it possible to fix the shelves from the Brimnes series so that they can safely hold heavier items?

The shelves from the Brimnes series are generally designed for standard use, defined by the manufacturer’s maximum load of about 7–10 kg per shelf (15–22 lbs). For heavier loads, multiple brackets should be used or additional wall anchors installed. They are mainly suitable for books, boxes, or decorations, but less so for heavy technical equipment.

How durable are the drawers under continuous use?

The drawers are made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and have sturdy runners that are very durable with normal use. They are well suited for daily use but should not be consistently overloaded with excessive weight. Regularly checking the screw connections and opening/closing them gently will extend their lifespan. In small rooms, it helps to reserve the drawers for light to medium-weight items to avoid material fatigue.

For this square layout, I recommend the following approach: - Place the bed preferably against a wall without windows or doors to maximize free space. - Use the Brimnes bed with drawers as the primary storage for bedding and textiles.

- Plan active zoning: clearly separate sleeping area, workspace (possibly a small desk), and storage. - Consider interior organizers for the wardrobe, such as pull-out clothes rails or boxes for accessories, to optimize use.

- Cable management: With cable grommets and suitable shelves, you can place electronics in the Brimnes shelving unit without obstruction. One option is to install small cable pass-throughs in the shelf boards.

- Shelf strength: Use additional spacers and, if possible, wall anchors to ensure the shelves remain stable.

Shelves from the Brimnes series are sturdy enough for everyday items like books or decorations. However, I would avoid placing heavy equipment directly on them, instead storing it in boxes or elsewhere. The drawers are robust but not designed for very heavy loads.

I love it when furniture is so well designed! The Brimnes drawers open really quickly, and when you pack everything neatly inside, the room looks very tidy. Just give it a try – I’m sure you’ll be surprised by how much fits inside!
