Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question about installing IKEA BILLY shelves on carpeted floors. I am planning to set up several BILLY shelves at home on a relatively thick carpet, but I’m concerned about how to secure them firmly without them tipping over or standing unstably due to the soft surface. Normally, I know shelves are either attached to the wall or placed directly on hard floors with solid ground contact. Since I don’t want to remove the carpet, I’m wondering what mounting options are available to fix the shelves securely and permanently without damaging the carpet or compromising stability. Are there special anchors, floor brackets, or other tricks to safely fasten BILLY shelves on carpeted floors? Thanks for your insights and experiences!

For your purpose, thin plywood or HDF (high-density fiberboard) panels are best suited. Both are stable, hardly warp, and have a smooth surface.

A panel about 10 mm (0.4 inches) thick should be sufficient to evenly distribute the load of the BILLY shelf and significantly reduce the carpet’s flexibility factor.

Plywood is more durable than HDF if the panel might need to be moved or lifted later. OSB (oriented strand board) panels are less suitable because their surface is often rough and uneven, which can cause wobbling.

Also, make sure the panel is slightly smaller than the shelf footprint to avoid protruding beyond the carpet edge, as that can look unattractive.

Are there specific materials or panels that are better suited for this?

I also have a wooden panel under my BILLY shelves, 12mm (1/2 inch) multiplex plywood. It works great and, for me, makes a difference on carpeted floors.

Perhaps combining the panels with non-slip mats could be an option, so nothing slips even on inclines. This is especially important if the carpet isn’t completely flat.

A solid base, such as a wooden board that compresses the carpet and provides a stable foundation, would be helpful here.

I agree with this. Additionally, I recommend not only using the supplied wall plugs for wall mounting but opting for heavy-duty anchors when dealing with solid walls. Combined with the base plate, these provide maximum stability on carpeted floors.

You should also check whether the shelf feet have felt pads or rubber bumpers to prevent damage to the shelf from friction or moisture on the surface below.
