Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question about installing IKEA BILLY shelves on carpeted floors. I am planning to set up several BILLY shelves at home on a relatively thick carpet, but I’m concerned about how to secure them firmly without them tipping over or standing unstably due to the soft surface. Normally, I know shelves are either attached to the wall or placed directly on hard floors with solid ground contact. Since I don’t want to remove the carpet, I’m wondering what mounting options are available to fix the shelves securely and permanently without damaging the carpet or compromising stability. Are there special anchors, floor brackets, or other tricks to safely fasten BILLY shelves on carpeted floors? Thanks for your insights and experiences!

This is the first thing you should clarify: How thick and soft exactly is your carpet? Wall mounting is definitely necessary if stability is desired. Simply placing the unit on the carpet without securing it to the wall will always be unstable.

Floor mounts on carpet are difficult because the carpet material between the shelf and the floor reduces stability. A proper substructure, for example, a wooden board that compresses the carpet and provides a stable base, would be helpful here. Have you considered that?

I would always secure the shelf to the wall. Without wall fixing, it will always wobble on carpet. If you don’t want to remove the carpet, it’s best to place a thin wooden board underneath.

A brief guide to your question:

1. BILLY shelves should always be secured to the wall using the supplied angle brackets. This is especially important on carpeted floors, as the soft surface greatly reduces stability.

2. If you want to add extra floor fastening, place stabilizing wooden or MDF boards under the shelves that are at least as large as the shelf’s footprint. This helps to distribute the load more evenly.

3. Installing anchors directly into the floor on carpet usually makes little sense, as there is often no solid substrate accessible.

4. Before fixing the shelf, align and level it using a spirit level.

In summary: wall mounting is essential, additional wooden boards increase stability, and do not remove the carpet unless absolutely necessary.

I agree, but I would also like to point out that you should consider the type and thickness of the carpet. A very high-pile carpet behaves almost like a spring. In that case, only either the wooden panel or removing the carpet in that area will help.

Just to get a better idea: What is the thickness of your carpet, Romuneo? Is it rather thin and firm, or more like velour with a high pile? That makes a big difference for stability.

Thanks for asking. The carpet is about 12 mm (0.5 inches) thick, short pile, relatively dense and firm. It doesn’t have a very deep pile but is still soft enough to give slightly when pressed. I haven’t considered using a wooden board as an underlay yet, but that seems sensible.

One more question: Are there specific materials or boards that are better suited for this? HDF, OSB, or plywood? It’s also important for me that the boards can be placed discreetly under the shelf, preferably without much effort.
