Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Besta shelving unit and would like to retrofit the existing doors with a soft-close feature, as the standard closing mechanism is quite hard and noisy. My specific questions are: Are there suitable soft-close fittings or dampers that can be easily integrated into the Besta system? How complex is the installation, especially when attaching dampers to the doors and frames? And are there any recommendations for models that fit the Besta price range and don’t appear too bulky? I’m really looking forward to practical advice and experiences – thanks in advance!

Regarding your question about retrofitting soft-close mechanisms for Ikea BESTA: The BESTA system usually comes with standard hinges featuring simple opening and closing functions. You can purchase special soft-close hinges as replacement parts that match the hole spacing of the existing drillings exactly. Alternatively, soft-close dampers are available, which can be installed inside the door or the cabinet frame. Installation is generally manageable with some basic DIY skills. It is important that the dampers or hinges are compatible with the door thickness and the opening angle. Recommendations: Blum and Hettich offer high-quality and relatively compact soft-close hinges that fit within the BESTA price range.

Replace the old hinges directly with soft-close hinges. Suitable options can be found from Blum or Hettich. Just make sure to check the hole spacing and compare the door dimensions.

I can add the following: If you don’t want to install completely new hinges, you can retrofit soft-close dampers that attach to the inside side of the door. Some are secured with screws or clamping mechanisms. This is often simpler, but you need to consider the available space inside the cabinet, as the BESTA shelving unit is quite slim. Also, check whether the dampers allow enough clearance for the door to open fully; otherwise, it may bind when closing. I have personally tried this solution on a BESTA, and it worked well – it requires some patience for adjustment, but the result is very satisfactory.

Install new soft-close hinges from Blum, removing the old ones. Pay attention to the hole dimensions to ensure the holes fit. Otherwise, use anchors and drill new holes.

Regarding soft-close for Ikea BESTA: I recommend completely replacing the standard hinges with soft-close models. Most soft-close hinges from reputable manufacturers are designed to be compatible with the mounting holes of BESTA hinges. You should consider the following points:

- Measure the door thickness (usually 16-22mm (0.6-0.9 inches) for BESTA)
- Check the hole spacing for the hinges (a 35mm (1.4 inches) system pitch is common)
- Choose new hinges with an appropriate opening angle for the BESTA system

Soft-close adapters or dampers attached to the side are more of a last resort, as they affect the door opening and require caution with narrow cabinets. Brands like Blum offer high-quality options that are easy to install and durable. Instructions can usually be found on the manufacturers’ websites or through specialist retailers.
