Hello everyone, I noticed that the original hinges on two of the five doors of my Ikea Billy bookshelf have worn out quite a bit. The doors no longer close properly and hang slightly crooked. Now I’m considering replacing the hinges entirely. My question to you: What alternatives to the original BILLY hinges are available that are at least equal in quality or better? It would be great if you could share tips on durable, easy-to-install replacement hinges and maybe also some advice on compatibility with the BILLY shelf. Thanks in advance!
Hello Stella32, regarding compatibility: IKEA BILLY shelves usually use standard Euro-hole panels with round hinge mounting plates. Blum, Hettich, and Häfele also offer compatible hinge systems that often fit directly. I recommend removing the hinge plate from the shelf before purchasing and taking measurements (e.g., hole spacing, diameter). This helps avoid surprises during installation.
I can confirm that. Instruction leaflets and technical drawings are very helpful. For BILLY, a 35 mm (1 3/8 inch) drill hole diameter usually fits the hinge cup.

It’s best to try it out in a hardware store or check technical datasheets.

I knew about the 35 mm (1.4 inch) diameter, but regarding the alternatives, I wasn’t sure if they were all designed for that size. One more question: Even with the same dimensions, are there differences in adjustability between hinges? For example, fine adjustments in depth, height, and width? I would like hinges that can be easily adjusted in case my doors aren’t perfectly aligned.

Are there differences in adjustment options for hinges even when the dimensions are the same?Yes, definitely. Blum hinges often feature triple adjustment (3D): height, depth, and lateral shift. This is very useful for precise door alignment.Other manufacturers may offer this too, but their adjustment mechanisms can be less convenient. Cheaper models sometimes lack fine adjustment entirely. For the best results, branded products with 3D adjustment are recommended.
