Hello everyone,

I am considering retrofitting my IKEA Besta cabinet doors with a soft-close system to reduce noise when closing and improve comfort. Unfortunately, I don't have a clear idea yet which system is compatible and how complex the installation really is in practice. My doors are classic Besta doors with the original mounting hinges, not integrated soft-close variants.

Therefore, my question to the community:

How can I effectively add soft-close to IKEA Besta doors? Are there specific soft-close dampers that can be easily attached to the existing hinges? Or do I need to replace the hinges completely? What tools and skills are required, and what should I watch out for when retrofitting? I am also interested in whether the appearance and function of the doors are changed or affected by the retrofit.

I appreciate all tips, whether DIY experiences or recommendations for good products. Thank you!

Hello Isidor_mar,

to equip your Besta doors with a soft-close function, there are basically two options:

- Completely replacing the hinges with IKEA-compatible soft-close hinges (e.g., the "BLUM CLIP top" type)
- Retrofitting additional soft-close dampers that are mounted on the existing hinges or inside the cabinet

The first option is more complex, as you need to remove the old hinges, install new ones, and possibly adjust the drill holes. The advantage is an integrated soft-close function without any external components.

The retrofit dampers are usually easier to install – however, they are visible and can affect the overall appearance. They are typically mounted inside the cabinet frame and cushion the closing motion.

Tools: A Phillips screwdriver, possibly a cordless drill for convenience, a measuring tape, and a spirit level are recommended. Accuracy during installation improves reliability.

It is important to choose the right product for the door thickness and hinge type so that the mechanism works properly and is not damaged.

I suggest testing the retrofit kit on one door first to assess the effort and effectiveness.

Best regards

Exactly, the two options are fundamental, but I would like to add that the type of hinge used in Besta cabinets plays a role. Most open Besta cabinets have clip hinges, which are relatively easy to replace.

If you want original soft-close hinges, look for hinges with built-in dampers – these fully replace the existing ones. The screw positions usually fit, though minor adjustments may be needed depending on the cabinet’s production year.

For retrofitting with external dampers: you need to be very precise because the dampers have a limited lifespan and, if installed incorrectly, they can either slow the doors too much when closing or, in the worst case, cause them to close abruptly.

Here is a recommended procedure:

- Remove the door
- Check the type of hinge and search for suitable new hinges (e.g., BLUM CLIP-top Soft-Close as a popular solution)
- If switching to new hinges, install completely and measure drilling holes precisely
- If retrofitting with dampers, attach according to the instructions, usually on the cabinet side under the hinge
- Rehang the door and make fine adjustments

One more note: the advantage of integrated soft-close hinges is that they are barely visible from the outside and can be adjusted more precisely to the door weight.

How are your doors constructed (material, door thickness)? I ask to better assess possible compatibility.

My advice is quite straightforward: With a Phillips screwdriver and some patience, you’re already halfway there. If you proceed carefully and don’t rush, nothing should stand in the way of smooth and quiet door closing.

I personally started by replacing the hinges on a Besta cabinet but eventually switched back to overlay dampers because they were a bit easier to install.

A little tip: When retrofitting, feel free to remove the doors and test-fit the new dampers or hinges first. Be careful not to bend the dampers, as that will render them useless.

And don’t worry about the appearance: The small dampers usually sit inside and are hardly noticeable—on some models, they are almost invisible. This way, your cabinet will feel like new without any major drilling or remodeling.
