Hello everyone,

I am currently planning an IKEA Metod kitchen and would like to retrofit the drawers with a soft-close feature. My specific question is about the best way to do this: Are there special installation kits or adapters available for purchase? Are there any particular measurements to consider to ensure the soft-close function works smoothly? And how complex is the installation compared to the factory-installed drawers? I have read quite a bit about the different Metod drawer runners but am unsure which versions are optimally compatible, especially for the large drawers.

I would be very grateful for any experience reports or detailed instructions, including tips on tools and potential issues during the retrofit.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Us_bar,

Retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on IKEA Metod drawers is generally possible, but it heavily depends on the type of drawer slides you have. Original Metod drawers with full-extension slides often already include some damping, otherwise, there are so-called soft-close adapters that can be installed between the slide and the drawer. Here are the key points:

- You should know whether your drawers use internal or external profile slides, as the adapters differ accordingly.
- The measurements of the slides must be exact since the soft-close mechanism needs to be positioned precisely.
- For installation, you will need a screwdriver, possibly a cordless drill, and a measuring tape.
- These adapters can usually be sourced from third-party suppliers, for example Blum, who also produce Metod-compatible components.

It is advisable to measure the slides beforehand and check the manufacturer's specifications. The installation process is not significantly different from regular drawer assembly but requires more precision when securing the soft-close elements; otherwise, the function will not work properly.

If you use original replacement parts from IKEA, they are mostly compatible, but there are also affordable alternatives. I have done this myself and recommend using one soft-close adapter per drawer for reliable operation.

That’s correct, and I would add: the soft-close function depends on fine adjustment. Sometimes it feels like you’re watching a diva listening—one millimeter here, a slightly different angle there, and suddenly the drawer closes smoothly and quietly, as if it were cushioned on velvet.

I once upgraded my Metod cabinets with non-original soft-close dampers—it worked great. It’s important to fully remove the drawers beforehand so you can make all the adjustments calmly. Patience is your best friend here! And yes, better to screw carefully than too quickly—your nerves will thank you.

For installation: a screwdriver or cordless drill, a bit of a feel for precision, and enjoyment of the small challenge—that’s all it takes.

In the end, it really makes the kitchen cozier and more elegant when everything closes quietly. Good luck!

Exactly, and to add to that: when choosing adapters, you should pay attention to their load capacity and whether they are compatible with the specific Metod rails. Most original parts have documented load limits, which is especially important for large drawers.

Also, a tip for adjustment: some systems allow fine-tuning of the soft-close damping, which makes sense for heavily loaded drawers to prevent noise or complete failure of the function.

If original replacement parts are not available, some manufacturers offer universal soft-close kits that, while not perfect, are sufficient for home use. It is important to strictly follow the correct positioning of the dampers when retrofitting and to test the drawer multiple times after installation.

I would also recommend retightening all screws after a few days, as they may loosen initially due to load.
