Hello everyone,

I want to replace the drawer slides on my Ikea Malm bed because they no longer operate smoothly and are partially worn out. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a detailed guide on the best way to do this—specifically, how to properly remove the old rails and rollers and install the new ones, whether special tools are needed, and what to pay special attention to so that the drawers open easily and quietly again in the end. It’s also important for me to know if the parts can be purchased individually or if it’s better to buy a complete set.

Has anyone here replaced the Malm drawer slides and can describe the process in detail? Thanks!

If your drawer sticks, also check whether the drawer cavities in the bed frame are warped.

This is an important point that is often overlooked. Replacing the drawer slides will not solve the problem if the frame is warped or worn. It is best to measure with a square to see if the sides are perpendicular and parallel. If not, aligning the slides will only help to a limited extent.

Thanks for the tip about the frame! I will check it on my end and adjust the frame if necessary.

That makes the whole situation a bit more complicated than I initially thought. Could you explain in more detail how to adjust such a frame without completely taking it apart?

In principle, readjusting a warped frame is usually a small challenge when the construction is made of plywood.

You can try carefully applying light pressure to the side panels using clamps to reshape them. The stresses should be gentle to avoid damaging the material.

Sometimes it also helps to slightly loosen the frame screws, gently reshape it with a soft hammer, and finally retighten all the screws.

However, if the piece of furniture is severely warped due to age, it may unfortunately be necessary to replace the entire bed frame or significant parts of it.

Here is a concise summary for replacing the drawer slides on a Malm bed:

1. Fully pull out the drawer and lift it slightly to release the slides.

2. Remove the old slides using a Phillips screwdriver – clips are often present, so loosen them gently.

3. Check the bed frame for any distortions using a spirit level and a square.

4. Align the new slides and tighten the screws just enough to hold them in place by hand.

5. Carefully reinsert the drawer and check if the slide alignment is correct.

6. Fully tighten the screws and verify that everything operates smoothly.

Quick tip: Make sure all components are included with the new parts – the ball bearings or plastic rollers and the slides should be complete.

Great, many thanks to everyone! I now have a clear to-do list:

- Carefully remove the old rails (watch the clips)
- Check the frame with a spirit level and gently align it with clamps if necessary
- Install the new rails dry and straight
- Test the drawer after carefully inserting it and then screw it in securely

If I encounter any problems, I will get back to you.

Thanks again for all the valuable tips and the great exchange! 🙂

Glad to hear the suggestions are helpful. If you like, I can also draw a simple sketch showing exactly how the rails should be installed, including the position of the screws and measurements for alignment.

Just let me know if you need it—I’m happy to help!
