Hello everyone,

I am looking for a practical way to repair small scratches on my Ikea Metod wooden fronts myself. The fronts have a rather smooth, laminated surface, so simple repainting is basically not an option. I am particularly interested in methods that do not require complex disassembly and can be done with common household materials or a small purchase.

Are there effective tips or products that have proven useful? What is the recommended approach if the scratches are mostly superficial and the wood look should be preserved as much as possible?

I would be very grateful for detailed instructions or shared experiences, as well as any warnings about potential pitfalls when repairing yourself.

Best regards!

Hey mingeorges,

first of all, respect for the precise question! With Metod fronts, here’s what I’ve experienced: small scratches can usually be easily fixed with a furniture touch-up pen – you can find these at hardware stores and they usually come in colors that match quite well. It’s important to lightly clean the surface beforehand to prevent residue from sticking to the pen.

You can also try using a bit of walnut oil or furniture wax, especially if the surface damage isn’t too severe. The oil penetrates slightly and makes scratches less visible without much effort. Just be careful not to use too much and test it first on an inconspicuous spot.

That matches my approach quite well. Good luck, you’ll get it done! 😉

Hello mingeorges,

here is a brief step-by-step guide on how I repair small scratches on Ikea Metod wood fronts myself:

- First, clean the surface with a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning agent.
- Choose a furniture touch-up pen that exactly matches the color of the front.
- Carefully color in the scratches with the pen, immediately wiping off any excess with a dry cloth.
- After it has dried, apply a thin layer of furniture wax or clear varnish to seal the area.

Common mistakes include inaccurate color matching, applying too much color, or using an unsuitable product.

This method has usually worked without any problems for me.

Sure, but isn’t that more of a placebo effect? In my opinion, these home remedies mostly just mask the damage rather than truly repair it. With laminated fronts like Ikea Metod, small flaws quickly look like cheap botching if you only smudge wax over them. Unless you really know what you’re doing and have extremely fine sandpaper plus specially matched paint.

My theory: If you want it to look really good, replacement or an expensive maintenance/repair service is the only option.

What do you think? How realistic is it to fix these issues yourself without compromising on the appearance?

Thank you, theota, for the critical comment. That’s exactly my point—trying to avoid any visible traces as much as possible. My cabinet fronts have a matte foil surface, which is difficult to repaint because you quickly end up with glossy or uneven spots.

Specifically, I’m interested in anything that preserves the matte finish and only visually evens out scratches without covering them up—for example, colored furniture markers that can be color-matched or special wax blends for matte surfaces.

Another issue is the durability of the repair. It’s not very helpful if the spot becomes noticeable again after just a few days.

Are there any experiences here with products that have proven effective or certain techniques that last longer?

I appreciate any tips.
