Hello everyone, I have noticed some small chips on the edges of my IKEA Besta sideboard. Since I still consider the piece to be in good condition and don’t want to simply replace it, I’m wondering how to properly repair these chipped edges. It’s important for me to find a solution that is durable and visually as unobtrusive as possible.

The edges are not very wide and are probably either veneer edges or painted edges. Does anyone have experience with suitable materials or techniques to restore such damage neatly? What tools are needed, and are there any special preparations required before starting the repair?

I’d appreciate practical tips or even step-by-step instructions, so I know what really works and what to pay attention to.

In summary:

- Most IKEA Besta edges are made of melamine-coated particleboard with foil edging.
- Small chips can be filled with fine sandpaper, wood or plastic filler, and then color-matched.
- Repair pens or markers offer a quick fix for minor damage but do not provide deep crack filling.
- Clean the surface and remove loose parts before starting any repair work.
- For larger damage, replacing the edge or using a professional edge-banding service is recommended.

This information is based on common recommendations from tradespeople and product specifications.

Choosing the right materials is crucial, as incorrect fillers (e.g., fast-drying wood filler with a foil base) can cause discoloration or further damage.

I therefore recommend checking before a repair whether the edge is actually just a foil or rather a synthetic resin coating.

This is exactly the crucial point that hardly anyone considers.

In fact, most BESTA edges are covered with foil, but there are also versions with painted edges made from MDF. The choice of repair material depends on this, since acrylic filler, for example, does not adhere well to high-gloss laminate edges and is more likely to chip off.

My tip: test the adhesion of the filler or paint in an inconspicuous spot before the repair. Also, using a primer on smooth painted edges helps improve the bond.

For foil edges, flexible silicone or acrylic filler is recommended, while for painted MDF edges, traditional wood filler works better.

This highlights how important it is to know the exact material before starting a repair.

First, clean the surface. Then fill any uneven areas with acrylic filler. After it dries, sand it smoothly. Finally, touch up the color using matching furniture markers. Done.
