Hello everyone,

I have some quite stubborn stains on the doors of my Ikea PAX wardrobe that cannot be removed with regular cleaning. The doors are white, and unfortunately, the stains seem to have penetrated somewhat. These stains mainly come from clothing, but also occasionally from pens or makeup.

My question is: How can I effectively remove such stubborn stains from the PAX doors without damaging the surface? What cleaning products or methods would you recommend that are specifically suitable for the coated surfaces of the PAX doors? I am looking for a solution that cleans deeply, gently, and thoroughly, without damaging the paint or the melamine coating.

Thanks for your tips!

First, it is important to know that Ikea PAX doors are usually coated with a melamine resin or foil finish. These surfaces are fairly durable but not scratch-resistant.

- To remove stains, start with a mild cleaning agent, such as dishwashing detergent diluted in water.
- Clean the surface with a soft, non-abrasive cloth.
- For tougher stains, a mixture of water and 70% isopropyl alcohol can be used, but this should be tested first on an inconspicuous area, as alcohol can damage surfaces.
- For makeup or pen marks, a plastic eraser can also be used carefully.

In general, abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals like acetone should never be used. These can damage the surface and permanently ruin matte or glossy finishes.

A plastic eraser (eraser for plastics) can also work well for removing makeup or pencil marks when used carefully.

This is a reasonable approach, but it would be interesting to know how durable this method is and whether it subtly alters the surface. Does anyone have specific experience with this?

Also: How effective are alternative solutions like vinegar water? Some people swear by it, but the pH level could be problematic, especially for coated furniture.

I would like to share a brief guide on how I deal with stubborn stains on Ikea PAX doors.

1. Clean with mild dish soap and warm water, wiping with a soft microfiber cloth.
2. For persistent stains, use isopropyl alcohol applied to a cotton swab and gently dab the stains—do not rub.
3. For pen marks, use a plastic eraser and gently treat the area without pressing too hard.
4. Immediately wipe the area again with water and dish soap to remove any residue.
5. Finally, dry with a soft cloth.

Common mistakes include:
- Rubbing too hard, which can scratch the surface.
- Using abrasive sponges or blades.
- Direct contact with harsh substances like paint remover.

This method has proven to be gentle and effective for me.

Thank you for the tip! The gentle dabbing instead of rubbing definitely makes sense to avoid damaging the surface.

What about the long-term effects? Is there a risk that the alcohol could permanently dull the coating?

And one more question: How often can this procedure be performed without losing quality? I would prefer not to use alcohol too frequently if it has negative consequences.

Allow me to offer a brief tutorial building on the previously mentioned tips.

Introduction:
The surfaces of Ikea PAX doors are durable but not immune to improper cleaning. To remove stains while protecting the surface, using the right technique is essential.

Step 1: Basic Cleaning
- Gently clean with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth.

Step 2: Treating Stubborn Stains
- Apply diluted isopropyl alcohol (around 70%) to a cotton swab or a corner of a soft cloth.
- Gently blot the stain without rubbing.
- Immediately wipe with clean water afterwards.

Step 3: Special Stains
- For marker stains, a plastic eraser can be used with light movements.
- Avoid sharp objects.

Common Mistakes
- Vigorous rubbing or sanding that causes dull spots.
- Using solvents such as acetone.

Conclusion
- After cleaning, dry the surface thoroughly.

Summary:
This method preserves the surface and ensures long-lasting protection. Isopropyl alcohol should be used sparingly to protect the coating.

Frequent mistakes, such as excessive rubbing, can cause damage. Therefore, it is best to start with small test areas.
