Hello everyone,

I own several Ikea Platsa cabinets, which are used frequently in the hallway and living room. I have noticed that the surfaces and edges of these cabinets tend to get dirty quite quickly in everyday use – whether from dust, grease from hands, or occasional water spots.

My specific question is: How can I best protect my Ikea Platsa cabinets from everyday dirt without affecting their appearance or functionality? Are there any recommended care methods or protective measures that are particularly suitable for the material properties of Platsa?

I look forward to your experiences and tips.

To effectively protect your Ikea Platsa cabinet from everyday dirt and wear, I recommend the following measures:

- Regularly wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth to prevent dust and dirt from sticking. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the surface.
- In areas with heavy use, such as handles or edges, a matte protective film or self-adhesive edge protector can help minimize mechanical wear.
- For waterproof surfaces, occasional application of furniture wax or a specialized furniture polish is suitable, but make sure it is compatible with the type of laminate or coating.
- Also, ensure dust-free air circulation around the installation area, as dust accumulation, especially in recesses, promotes faster soiling.

In general, protection should be as invisible as possible and should not affect the texture. For white-fronted Platsa units, I also recommend promptly removing any stains to prevent absorption.

I would like to explain this in more detail and provide a brief guide. First, it is important to know that the Platsa cabinet is usually made of coated particleboard, which means the surface is relatively delicate. Therefore:

- Step 1: Remove dust – Use microfiber cloths for this, as they pick up dust well without scratching the surface.
- Step 2: Remove stains – For stains caused by hand contact or water marks, gently wipe first with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild dish soap.
- Step 3: Dry – Immediately wipe with a dry cloth to prevent water stains or moisture penetration.
- Step 4: Apply protective film – Corner protection films available at hardware stores are useful against scratches. There are also thin, transparent films that protect against fingerprints, for example on high-gloss fronts.
- Step 5: Professional furniture care products – If desired, use only products specifically tested for laminated surfaces. Avoid moisturizing products like oils or waxes, as they can cause stains or an uneven appearance.

I also recommend not using all-purpose cleaners, as most are too aggressive and may dull or damage the surface. Have you noticed any particular types of dirt or stains that are especially problematic?

I’m adding a detailed procedure here along with some tips on potential pitfalls:

The surface of Ikea Platsa is usually melamine-coated, which is generally easy to maintain but does have its limits.

First, stains should be treated as early as possible since they become harder to remove the longer they sit. For grease stains, a soft cloth with a bit of dish soap usually suffices. Be careful not to rub too hard to avoid damaging the coating layer.

If the cabinet is located in an entryway, I also recommend:

- Using small runners or placemats on surfaces where items are frequently placed.
- If children or pets often use the cabinet, fabric or clip-on handles are a good alternative because they can be washed.

For long-term protection, I advise against waxes or oils and instead suggest silicone- or acrylic-based growth sealants, which are available at furniture care stores. These form a thin protective layer that shields the cabinet from mechanical wear and dirt without altering the matte appearance.

Furthermore, I recommend wiping the cabinet at least every 2 months with a well wrung-out cloth to prevent dust and dirt from setting in.

Finally, a question for you: How heavily are your Platsa fronts used? Are food items placed on them, or mostly objects that bring in dirt?

That’s a good tip, thank you. I have actually had some trouble with water spots, and it seemed like the surface was no longer as smooth.

I do occasionally place food items on them briefly, for example grocery bags or slightly dirty things from the garden. Also, it’s a main storage area and the fronts are touched quite often.

I’m considering using removable protective films that can be replaced regularly. Has anyone had experience with these to permanently prevent scratches and stains?

I would appreciate if anyone could share long-term experiences with protecting Ikea Platsa.
