Hello everyone, I recently installed several IKEA Platsa cabinet doors and have noticed that some of the hinges feel a bit stiff and slightly creak. My question is: How should I properly maintain the hinges on IKEA Platsa doors to ensure a long service life and keep opening and closing smooth and quiet? Are there any specific care instructions, which lubricants are suitable, and how often should maintenance ideally be done? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello larsen54, that is a very good and detailed question! IKEA PLATSA doors use snap-on or screw-on hinges, which can wear out or become stiff over time due to dust, light soiling, or insufficient lubrication.

For proper maintenance, please follow these steps:

- First, thoroughly clean the hinges with a soft cloth to remove dust and larger dirt particles.
- Next, it is recommended to use a lubricant specifically designed for metal joints, preferably a fine spray containing Teflon or silicone, as these do not gum up or attract dust.
- Use sparingly: one or two sprays are enough to evenly coat the hinge.
- Then open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant thoroughly.

It is also important to know which lubricants to avoid: do not use WD-40 as a long-term solution, since it mainly functions as a rust remover and is not suitable as a lubricant—it evaporates relatively quickly and does not leave a lasting lubricating film.

Maintenance should be carried out approximately every six months or sooner if the hinges start to squeak or the door feels rough when opening and closing.

I am also curious: Are the hinges fully screwed in on your end, and is there possibly a lot of weight on the opening surfaces? This can also affect wear.

Simply apply a light coating of silicone spray to the hinges every few months. Make sure to wipe them clean beforehand, as this helps the lubricant spread more evenly.

Exactly, that’s the first important step! I recommend checking the screws for tightness as well to prevent excessive friction.

Also, make sure to apply the lubricant sparingly, as too much grease usually attracts dust, which over time has the opposite effect.

Additionally, you can easily adjust the hinges; IKEA hinges are designed so you can change their position quite simply using a Phillips screwdriver. This helps avoid the door sticking and reduces stress on the hinges.

My tip: make this a regular routine—you’ll really have peace of mind regarding the doors’ lifespan.

Haha, I initially neglected the hinges during the first installation of my PLATSA wardrobe and was quickly punished: the doors squeaked and creaked! 😅 Thanks to everyone for the advice, now everything runs smoothly (literally!).

My personal tip: a bit of humor while lubricating helps too – just open and close the door with some energy (but not too hard 😉) after applying the lubricant, so it spreads evenly.

And yes, less is more! Too much lubricant quickly turns the hinges into dust magnets, which nobody wants. So, keep at it, and the furniture will be a joy! 👍
