Good morning everyone!

I have the following question: I own several IKEA Billy bookcases and have noticed that dust tends to stick very firmly to the shelves. The dust is not loose but actually adheres to the surfaces, making it difficult to wipe off and often leaving an unpleasant film on the shelves.

I’m interested in how to prevent this dust buildup on Billy shelves. I’m wondering if it might be related to the materials used for the shelves, the humidity in the room, or possibly how the shelves are cleaned and maintained.

Does anyone have practical experience or tips on how to stop dust from sticking or hardening without having to invest in expensive cleaning products?

Looking forward to your suggestions and thanks in advance!

Hello,

to prevent dust buildup on BILLY shelves, I recommend:

1. Regularly wipe with a microfiber cloth, as it traps dust effectively.
2. Avoid using a damp cloth, as this tends to make dust stick more.
3. Monitor the room’s humidity; the ideal range is 40-60%.

This usually helps quite effectively.

Hello kiantoine,

I understand your issue well; dust pressing onto furniture with smooth surfaces is common. Regarding the material: BILLY shelves are usually made of melamine-coated engineered wood, which has a relatively smooth surface, making dust more likely to stick.

The main cause of the "pressing" effect is often increased humidity or fine dust particles that adhere to the surface due to static electricity.

Two tips:

- Try cleaning the shelves either dry and regularly with a dust cloth; microfiber cloths work very well because they mechanically pick up dust without smearing it.

- Avoid using damp cleaning cloths or sprays, as water can fix the dust in place, causing it to press onto the surface.

- You might also try using an antistatic agent (special furniture care spray) after cleaning to reduce static attraction—these are often available without harsh chemicals and are generally safe for furniture.

If the room’s humidity is too high, a dehumidifier can help.

Best regards!

In short: Dust mixes with moisture or oils on the surface and then sticks firmly. Wipe dry regularly and avoid placing anything with food residues or oils on the shelves.

Monitor humidity levels.

Done.

Exactly, to add:

Electrostatic charge often builds up from synthetic materials and dry air. Especially with furniture made from melamine-coated chipboard, static can attract dust particles.

My tip:

- A humidifier can help because static charge increases in overly dry air.
- Additionally, using a fine antistatic cloth can not only remove dust but also neutralize the static.

Using both methods together helps to sustainably reduce dust sticking to shelves.

This is brilliant, how precisely you handle it! 🙂

I would add: For me, the trick that worked was regularly wiping the BILLY shelves dry with a microfiber dust cloth. I noticed that if you apply a furniture wax or a very thin layer of mild furniture oil right after cleaning, dust tends to stick less 🙂

But be careful: Don’t apply too much, otherwise it gets sticky and you end up with the opposite effect!

Give it a try – it helped me, and the shelves stay looking fresh longer!

Don’t get discouraged, every little trick counts! 🙂
