Hello everyone,
I am planning to get a Billy bookcase from IKEA and want to use it for as long as possible. My main question is: Which of the different BILLY bookcases are especially durable, particularly regarding stability under heavy load and the longevity of the surface finishes?
I am interested not only in the construction but also in experiences with different materials (particleboard, MDF, veneer, or similar), as well as any differences between older models and the newer versions.
Has anyone had reliable experience with specific BILLY variants and can provide advice on what to look for when buying if durability is the primary concern?
Thanks in advance!

Alberto5112 Nov 2020 10:12I am very familiar with this issue, as I have been using several BILLY shelves for years and often think about their durability. It is reassuring to hear that the MDF back panel is actually supposed to be more robust, as I initially worried about sagging when the shelf is fully loaded. I still remember how disappointing it was when one of my shelves became wobbly after some time.
Perhaps you could also advise whether it makes sense to install additional braces or if it’s better to look for special versions? Sometimes, it feels uncertain whether investing in such upgrades is really worthwhile for a relatively inexpensive piece of furniture.

Regarding the durability of BILLY shelves, it should be noted that the standard versions made of particleboard may wear out more quickly under heavy load, especially due to sagging of the shelves.
A worthwhile alternative are versions with reinforced shelves or those containing MDF components, as MDF is denser and more durable. Some older models have better joints at the feet, which helps keep the shelf supports more stable.
An important tip: the maximum load limit per shelf should not be exceeded, and the shelves should be fixed to the wall whenever possible to reduce the risk of tipping. This significantly extends their lifespan.

Hello Drasar,
I would like to add that surface treatment plays an important role in the durability, especially for the veneered BILLY models. Laminate is easy to maintain and resistant to scratches and moisture, whereas painted surfaces tend to wear out faster if not handled properly.
This is really crucial. Additionally, I have noticed that older versions sometimes had sturdier screw connections, although this varies from model to model.
If you plan to store heavy books or equipment, it’s also worth considering accessories such as extra metal brackets or special shelving boards.
