Hello community,

I recently bought an Ikea Hemnes sideboard and now want to prevent the furniture from getting damaged quickly.
My question is: What specific measures can I take to avoid scratches, discoloration, or other signs of wear on the HEMNES furniture? I am especially interested in proven methods for caring for the white lacquer and the treated wood surface, since I have read that some cleaning products or mechanical impacts can quickly cause problems.

Are there any special cleaning techniques, care products, or precautions during use (for example, protective mats, optimal placement regarding sunlight or moisture) that have proven particularly effective in practice for HEMNES models? I would be very grateful for detailed tips and experiences.

Thank you in advance!

Hello janken,

First of all, your question is very well formulated and considers important aspects of furniture care. Although the HEMNES series is among the more durable Ikea furniture, there are still some points to keep in mind to enjoy it for a long time.

For the white lacquer or painted surface, I recommend the following:
- Use only a mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent, ideally diluted with water. Strong alkaline or acidic cleaners can damage the paint.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove surface dust and light dirt. Avoid abrasive sponges or rough cloths.
- Prevent standing moisture on the surface, as it can cause stains or blistering. Water-repellent coasters for glasses or vases can help here.

For the wooden edges or the thicker parts made of treated wood (e.g., pine with oil or stain):
- Regularly oiling with suitable wood care oil protects against drying out and minimizes scratches.
- Here too, it is important not to use harsh cleaning agents and to avoid mechanical stress.

Another important point is the placement:
- Avoid placing the furniture in direct sunlight to prevent discoloration or fading.
- Also, pay attention to consistent indoor humidity; too dry can cause wood to shrink, while too much moisture leads to swelling.

Regarding protective mats: Ideally, use felt pads under items on the sideboard to prevent scratches when moving them.

I would be interested to know if your HEMNES piece already shows wear marks or if you want to establish care routines right from the start? That makes a difference in care levels.

Best regards!

That hits the nail on the head. No harsh cleaners!

I also recommend dusting daily with a dry microfiber cloth. This prevents scratches caused by dirt particles.
And: Don’t place hot pots directly on the furniture without a protective base.

As a supplement, I would like to offer a brief guide to avoid damage to Ikea HEMNES furniture – based on common mistakes I have observed with customers:

1. Assembly:
- Careful screwing is crucial. Loose connections often result from overtightening or not tightening screws enough.
- Use the supplied dowels and screws exactly according to the instructions. For improved stability of heavily loaded parts, you can also apply wood glue as an additional measure.

2. Moisture Protection:
- Wipe off any damp spots immediately; do not let them dry on the surface!
- In bathrooms or other humid areas, choose appropriate furniture constructions – HEMNES is not designed to withstand constant moisture.

3. Cleaning:
- Avoid solvents, as they irreversibly damage the surface.
- For stubborn dirt, a damp cloth with a drop of dish soap can be used, followed by thorough drying.

4. Protection Through Accessories:
- Felt pads on furniture legs and under decorative items help prevent scratches on floors and furniture.
- Use placemats or coasters when placing drinks or hot items on the furniture.

5. UV Protection:
- Avoid direct sunlight where possible, or reduce it with curtains to prevent fading.

6. Care of the Wood Finish:
- Reapply oil on wooden surfaces annually; for painted parts, usually cleaning alone is sufficient without additional treatment.

In conclusion, I want to emphasize that the HEMNES series is fundamentally robust, but—as with all furniture—proper care ensures it lasts for decades.

If you have any questions about specific assembly or maintenance, feel free to ask!
