Hello everyone, I am currently planning a wardrobe solution using the Ikea PAX system and hope to get some tips here. My question is: What is the best approach if I want to set up my PAX wardrobe to work optimally as a walk-in closet? Specifically, I have about 3 meters (10 feet) of wall space available, a ceiling height of 2.35 meters (7 feet 9 inches), and want to combine various elements such as hanging rods, drawers, and shelves to accommodate both hanging and folded clothes efficiently.
I am also interested in which planning steps make sense to maximize storage space without making the solution overloaded or impractical. I am already using the PAX planner from Ikea but find it somewhat confusing at times and would like to hear about your experiences – are there any tips or basic design principles I should consider?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello leanvin, very good and specific question! When planning your PAX wardrobe solution, you should first carefully analyze your typical clothing range.
- How much do you hang up (shirts, jackets, long coats)?
- How much do you keep folded (sweaters, T-shirts)?
- Do you need storage space for shoes, accessories, or jewelry?
With this information, you can choose the interior fittings more precisely.
The PAX planner is practical, but to understand it better, it helps to first create a rough sketch grid on paper, so you can distribute the elements sensibly along the entire wall. This way, you avoid overcrowding and can optimally allocate storage space among the key categories.
If you want, I can also gladly provide tips on proven combinations of hanging rods and drawers.

For additional planning: Make sure to efficiently use the frame height with a ceiling height of 2.35 m (7 ft 9 in). For example, Ikea offers PAX frames that are 236 cm (7 ft 9 in) tall, which provide good storage capacity without creating overly tall cabinets that are difficult to use.
- Use different levels for hanging clothes (e.g., double hanging rods) for shorter garments to save space.
- Drawers are especially suitable for underwear and smaller clothing items.
- Adjustable shelves offer flexibility for changing storage needs.
Important: Also plan for interior lighting if your closet is rather dark. It significantly improves usability.

Great project, leanvin! 😊 From my experience with the PAX system, it’s incredibly fun to customize everything exactly to your own needs! My tip: don’t just use the planner as a design tool—download the PDF and highlight the items you use often or rarely, so you can prioritize your storage space properly!
And don’t worry if you need to revise your plans a few times. That’s part of the process! In the end, you’ll have a tailor-made solution that brings you real satisfaction!!! 👍

They overthink and make the setup unnecessarily complicated. Why not just buy a few flexible modules and adjust them again if needed? PAX is not set in stone!
Some plan with too much perfectionism, losing flexibility and time as a result.
