EvrenmiI am currently facing the challenge of designing the installation of my new Ikea Metod kitchen in the best possible way to ensure both stability and flexibility for future modifications. Based on my experience so far, the individual modules are generally functional, but especially during planning and assembly, I wonder how to optimize the setup so that the kitchen units remain dimensionally stable over the long term while also being easy to expand or remodel if needed. Are there proven tips for reinforcing the basic structure, the correct order of assembly, or how to connect the individual cabinets? For example, how do you handle leveling and securing the individual components to allow for later adjustments without much effort? I look forward to detailed experiences and recommendations that go beyond the basic Ikea instructions.
In my opinion, the key to assembling Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets is precise planning and careful alignment of each unit. I recommend the following points:
- Use a spirit level at every step, including when securing the units to the wall.
- Connect the individual modules using the supplied connectors, as they provide stability.
- To allow for easier future modifications, avoid using too many permanent adhesives or screws where modules could otherwise be detached without much effort.
- Reinforce the base cabinets on uneven or floorboard surfaces by using shims.
- Especially important: Check drywall or plaster walls beforehand and, if necessary, use spacers to ensure the cabinets are perfectly flush.
Following these steps can save a lot of trouble later on.

The most important basis when assembling Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, in my opinion, is precise pre-planning and careful alignment of each unit. That is generally true, but I would like to add that simply following the Ikea instructions often isn’t enough if you want to achieve truly optimal stability. In my opinion, it is also important to use additional stabilizers between the cabinets, such as angle brackets, especially for longer kitchen runs or increased loads like heavy countertops.
Furthermore, the assembly sequence should not be underestimated: screw the modules together first, fully connect them before fixing to the wall, and only then fasten at a precisely aligned position. Some users completely ignore the issue of wall irregularities and attach each cabinet individually to the wall, which limits flexibility.
So why not:
- First align the end wall or baseboard
- Assemble the entire cabinet unit
- Then install it as a whole
This way, the structure can be more easily expanded or adjusted later on.
This topic is really interesting—I recently had the same thoughts while building my own setup! 🙂
I can only encourage you not to get discouraged if it’s not perfect the first time. A few things really helped me:
- Plan plenty of time! Don’t rush.
- Have someone to help, since many modules are heavy and awkward.
- Read through the instructions as often as needed, especially the tip boxes.
- Keep extra screws and connectors ready in case something breaks or is missing.
- And: I always pre-assembled the individual modules on the floor and then put them together, so you can immediately see if everything fits.
The effort is definitely worth it, and in the end you get a kitchen that fits together really well and feels great! Just keep going and feel free to share your experiences here!

Some users completely ignore the issue of wall variations and attach each cabinet individually to the wall, which limits flexibility. This is effective.
Additionally: Ikea Metod cabinets are designed for modular adjustments, which makes planning more complex than with standard furniture.
To optimize stability, I recommend:
- Always connect all cabinets fully to each other before fixing them to the wall.
- Use self-adhesive felt pads or plastic feet for uneven floors.
- Adjust cabinet heights where necessary using the adjustable feet to compensate for wall irregularities.
- For corner solutions, diagonal braces are often useful to prevent cabinets from twisting.
The wall mounting method should always consider the wall type (e.g., drywall / plasterboard, solid brick, concrete), using appropriate anchors and screws.
This approach minimizes stress and keeps later modifications manageable.
